Will Everton keep Andy Johnson?

Everton have fiercely denied any possibility of the sale of Andrew Johnson. But it has been heavily rumored that West Ham are about to make a huge offer for the player, we have seen Everton buckle before, will it happen again?

When speculation was rampant that Wayne Rooney would be sold, Everton also staunchly denied any possibility of a sale until they realized Manchester United were willing to pay big money for him. Everton survived ok by winning lots of games 1-0. They turned that cash into a bit of quality spread across the side and made due. They played some boring football though, grinding out results and forcing me to put toothpicks on my eyelids to stay awake.

So what will happen should it be true that West Ham are lining up an 18m pound offer for the England international? In my opinion, they will sell. Recall a hear and a half ago how they tried to unsettle Johnson at Crystal Palace? The old adage that a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. Everton have taught themselves that they can survive just fine without a big name up front and there are some decent marksman out there to replace Johnson and thicken the pocket at the same time.

A profit of almost 10m pounds on Andy Johnson would have to be seriously considered. They could buy Jermaine Defoe or Darren Bent and still have enough to get themselves a decent winger or some help at the back. Should Everton sacrifice excitement? I am not a supporter, tough call.

Comparisons with the Wayne Rooney sale are ridiculous. Rooney changed his agent, and spent a season (03/04) gradually becoming more and more arrogant, upsetting the dressing room, amidst constant newspaper speculation he needed to leave Everton to become a 'top player'. EFC sold him on August 30, 2004, after he gave in a transfer request a few days before the transfer deadline, leaving EFC with no time to buy an adequate replacement.

EFC may have won lots of games 1-0 in 04/05, but teams get 3 points whether they win games 1-0 or 6-0. It smacks of a hatred of EFC to denigrate their achievement of finishing 4th (breaking up the monopoly for one of the few times in the Premiership era) to criticise them for winning games 1-0.

As for Everton playing boring football, we scored the 6th highest number of goals in the Premiership and had the 5th best defence last season. We also had the best goal difference outside the top 4. Boring? I think not.

Andy Johnson will not be sold. It was a pathetic rumour started on a West Ham messageboard that grew a life of its own and made the newspapers during a period when there was absolutely no other news happening.

David Moyes is building a team for the UEFA Cup next season, and also to challenge for 5th place upwards. It would be nice if some credit was given for once regarding ridiculous snidey remarks about past achievements and misguided opinions about EFC's quality of football.

Johnson is overated and West ham have bigger fish to fry !!
Tevez will stay as he is on a three year contract and magnusson said today he is going nowhere and with Ashton back he wouldn't get a shift anyway.

Scally, I love you. Well said! Yet another 'wannabe' journalist with too much time on their hands writing for a third rate football website, and the clamour to move Rooney on from EFC with the constant pressure from the national media was a DISGRACE. To unsettle a player in such a way is only in the interest of the top four teams in this country... the top four! Now if all the fans of all the other clubs stopped buying shitty red tops such as the Sun, NOTW (which were instrumental in the pressure on Rooney to move and EFC to sell) and so on then the pathetic attempts at impartial journalism would go un-rewarded and thus stop making a more stable enviroment for all the players of the rest of our teams. Johnson stays, and any journalist that may read this fuck off and write something interesting and different I care about: maybe the preperations of various paralimpians for next years olympics- or is that too much effort when you can easily write unimaginative shit about when Berbatov might end up playing for Man U or West Ham have money and Johnson is a good player- lets say he's going there! Lazy bastards- WRITE SOMETHING ELSE other than what you thing the public might want to read and therefore buy your papers you profit driven whores. One last thing- has Rooney played better for England than when he did in Euro 2004 when he was at Everton? NO. Those three years at a top club playing for a top manager must have been instumental in Rooney's development when everyone knoooooows you have to be playing Champions league football to develop right? Stop buying papers printing the wild transfer rumours and they will stop!

I'm delighted West Ham fans think that Johnson is overrated. Obviously 12 goals (none of which were penalties) from 32 games, despite spending 3 months of the season injured, is nowhere near the quality that the mighty CL-place chasing West Ham are looking at signing.

I'm quite sure Tevez and his agent will snub the likes of Milan and Madrid in favour of Nathan's Pie & Eel Emporium, and that he'll form a great partnership with that proven Ptremiership striker, Dean Ashton.

If you'll notice in my article, I mentioned that the season AFTER ROONEY LEFT Everton played boring football. Did I say anything about this past season?? No, I did not. In fact, my piece says that Everton have a choice, and they do, to sell Johnson or not.

The rumor did not start on a message board, you give message boards and people like me all too much credit for manipulating public opinion, West Ham's new owner Magnusson and Everton's chairman Kenwright are friends... Magnusson asked him to sell Johnson. Magnusson wants the player.

As for my article, I stand by it. Everton played better football this past season and are not above selling a quality player and going back to grinding out results. If you want to find fault with what I say, read more carefully.

"Magnusson asked him to sell Johnson. Magnusson wants the player."

That is a totally incorrect statement, given that Magnusson said, "On the specific issue regarding discussions between West Ham and Everton FC, Mr Magnusson added: "I've had a very positive discussion with my good friend Bill Kenwright, the Everton Chairman, and can confirm that West Ham have not and are not bidding for any Everton player at this time."

You are talking rubbish my friend. And the rumour did start on a West Ham messageboard.
