Arsenal lose out in French international’s transfer: told you so

Recently I reported that French international winger Franck Ribery would not be heading to Arsenal as was widely expected, but rather forgo the Premiership for the Bundesliga and join Bayern Munich. A lot of nasty comments later, I plant the flag: I told you so.

Ribery has joined the German club on a four-year deal from French outfit Marseille.

Bayern are tipped to have paid 17m pounds for the player with performance clauses and a further 3m pounds if they qualify for Europe next season also in the contract. He now joins Luca Toni and Marcell Jansen as Bayern look to recover from one of the worst seasons in their recent history.

This leaves the Gunners without a significant signing so far this transfer season. Florent Malouda of Lyon has been linked to join Arsenal as it became more and more clear Ribery was not arriving, but even there they face stiff competition from Liverpool for the player.

Ribery joined Marseille back in 2005 and has scored 11 goals in 60 appearances during his career at the French club. He had his breakout at last summer’s World Cup where his grit, determination and talent impressed many clubs.

Ribery passed a medical in Munich today before signing on with the 20 time German champions. Luca Toni was also presented today.

Bayern has now spent 40m pounds so far on players this off season, joining Manchester United as big spenders. Arsenal better get on the ball or see another 4th place next season.

How exactly did arsenal lose out to bayern over ribery, when we was never in for him? Just look around the many arsenal blogs & you will see over 60% of the comments were anti signing Ribery anyway, especially at 20 million, which is what he will have cost bayern next summer.

If you truly believe that arsenal are in for every player we get linked to, then you're a serious fool. Wenger knows who he wants & will move when the time is right, maybe that will be next week, maybe next month, but he will sign one or two players.

We are one month into the transfer window & have nearly 3 months left before it shuts. Please stop crying about signings, after all who have chelski signed....Pizzaro (Great, really sad we missed him, not), what about Liverpool...no nobody there, spuds..Bale (another kid with potential). The only team that has made any significant signings is man utd.

Wale, maybe this spending will come off and u'll win the champs league next season :p

I fail to see how a Bayern fan can rub anything in a gooners face after they failed to qualify for the champs league despite being the most powerful team in a dead league.

I don't remember Arsenal ever being 'in' for Ribery. Munich are fools; they paid over the odds because Ribery's agent and amrseille went around planting stories that Arsenal and madrid were chasing him.

Artsenal already has two monster signings that will be playing for them that didn't really last year. Henry and Van Persie

Henry will be playing for Barca next year, not Arsenal. Arsenal were in for Ribery, you guys are just bitter because he decided to sign for a better team.

So what if we have lost out on Ribery, he does not score goals. We need people who can convert our scoring chances, that is what we lacked this past season. Can be achieved by coaching the current squard.

As for Henry to Barca or Milan, if it were not just for PR reasons, I would say he can f**k off. He is the captain for goodness sake! He has a part to play in making the team play and score. He scores wonderful goals granted, but his leadership qualities really suck!

Henry should look at what happened to Roy Keane. No one is biger than the club, not even Dien.
