French super-prospect to Arsenal?

You may not know the name, but Rio Mavuba is one of the best players in the world today.

The 21 year old French international made a shuddering impact on the French league last season. His defensive midfield skills scuttled attack after attack to the point that he was given his first international cap. He started in a 0-0 draw, where he replaced the injured Patrick Vieira.

Commenting on a move to Arsenal, Mavuba replied:

"They are considering the prospect of a move next season.”

I’ll bet they are. I picked Mavuba as one of the players to replace Vieira at Arsenal. If he keeps playing the way he played last season Arsenal, are going to get priced out. It would be poetic to see Vieira’s international replacement become his Arsenal replacement as well.

Let me curb my enthusiasm, a bit: he’s very young for a role that requires stability, especially at an attacking side like Arsenal. But the upside is having, potentially, the best player in the world at that position in a few years.

If Rio-Antonio Mavuba doesn’t join Arsenal he’ll be playing for a top-top European side within a year or so.

In my list of 5, at number 3 was Mavuba. He’s do the job for Arsenal if he joined today, and is the world’s best prospect in defensive midfield.

WHY NOT SIGN HIM NOW BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE DOES

I haven't seen him play, but obviously he's highly regarded so perhaps it's worth a shout.

However, from what I can determine, based on various websites, he's only 1.71m (5'6") tall, so that doesn't address a crucial need in the Arsenal team--SIZE!!!

In the end, I'm sure Wenger is looking at players based on what they offer in terms of tactics rather than as a straight-up replacement for Vieira.

First of all, Rio Antonio Mavuba is not that highly rated here in France, names like Mathieu Bodmer and Modesto M'Bami surpass him in that area. And Domenech was making a fool of himselves during that day when he replaced Vieira with this guy. Rio is a lion hearted player, but he's way lacking in the technical department. I will be surprised if AW decided to buy Rio, as he can get a better player in Diarra or Bodmer.

He's short. Thats true. I forgot to mention that in the article as a problem.

But so is Makelele and you dont hear anyone complaining at Chelsea.

I wouldnt pair him with Fabregas. Technically, yes, he has a few things to learn, but technique is learned, talent is not.

By the way, I saw that first game against Ireland with France, what did he do wrong? I saw him play a perfectly clean game: stayed at home, cleaned up, kept possession, made safe passes. What was missing?

And how did Domenech look a fool and continue to include Mavuba in the side? That doesnt make sense.
