Vieira to Juventus looks imminent

In the Italian media there are reports that a Patrick Vieira deal has been finalized with Arsenal.

I just published my predictions for the Premiership next season and I’m already regretting it. I placed Arsenal 2nd, but not without Vieira.

What a surprising move, as last year Real Madrid wanted the player and were offering a lot more and a better team. Juventus must be offering Vieira a lot of money. I can’t see another reason he’d trade Arsenal style football for Juventus’s style of play. And if is willing to trade those two, he’s selling out.

It’s also claimed that the deal is for 5 years. Do you think that Arsenal is getting hurt by its single year contract stance?

Vieira might worry that in a few seasons he may also be getting Bergkamp contracts. I wouldn’t want that either, Pires was offered a single year deal and is going.

Coach Arsene Wenger must have something up his sleeve to lose Edu, Vieira and Pires in the same year.

I think M. Wenger does have something up his sleeve. As he had seen Arsenal played without Vieira last season for a string of games, and did ok, he m thought they can make it even without Vieira. This is provided that Fabregas and Flamini will be even more mature than last season, or maybe he has targetted someone who may be able to fill Vieira's boots. Hey, how many times M. Wenger ha turn an unknown player into world calibre footballer.

I got on your case about it when you first reported rumors of Viera's move, saying Italy doesn't attract great stars. Stating that (apparently) all Italian clubs play defensive football. I hate Juventus, but even a child knows that Juventus are much more equipped to winning something in Europe than Arsenal. Arsene Wenger is tactically inept, Arsenal is a club equipped to whip on Blackburns and Crystal Palace and draw against Rosenborg? This is what you get for watching too much Premiership and not enough football outside of the island. This is the real world, welcome.

Hey, but just remember one thing:

Liverpool won the CL after Owen left.

I do agree with you though, I think Arsenal's problems in Europe are tactical.

"Arsenal only have one speed" they need to develop a patient (ie "defensive") style for Europe. Barcelona's attacking style worked because they have the cash to spend on the Ronaldinhos, Eto'os and Decos, proven players, not potentials (ie Fabregas).

I think Vieira joined Juventus because 1) he'd rather join a team that (even though they haven't won the Champions League in a decade) has been in enough finals and just seem to be unlucky (Nedved's suspension and Davids' injury in the 02/03 finals); and 2) he played under Capello and knows what he can do; and 3) probably believed he could mean the difference.

But what Juventus probably needs is a creative forward like Cassano or a killer-passer like Riquelme. Nedved and Del Piero are getting old and just aren't consistent enough.

Still you have to wonder why Vieira chose to join Juventus and not Real Madrid. It's not like Real can't afford €20m or £850k.
