Where are the new players?

Tom Hicks and George Gillett made promises of transfer fees when they took Liverpool over but so far we’ve seen nothing but empty hands.

Liverpool have been linked with all kinds of players: Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres, Yossi Benayoun, etc but so far no moves and low-ball offers. In trying to land Fernando Torres, Liverpool seem more interested in moving some of their less desirable players in part exchange but Atletico Madrid are not interested, knowing full well what their player is worth. Lots of talk of a Torres offer but none has officially be made.

Despite Benitez being quoted as needing his squad set up as early as possible there seems to be no movement to strengthen in areas the team needs. In fact, the only significant move of the summer is for a holding midfielder something Liverpool have a glut of.

What is all the delay for? Is this a sign that the new owners are more interested in profit than they are the club? Is Liverpool going to wait for a bidding war to ensue while the new owners acclimate themselves to the way the global transfer market operates? All interesting questions and not a lot of answers.

For example, one situation that puzzles me is that Marseille want to buy Djibirl Cisse and Liverpool won’t make a deal. They should sell the player and take the cash. Bolton are also interested in him for 6m. He should have been sold before Torres was available. Same goes for Craig Bellamy and Momo Sissoko, with a glut in midfield why is he needed? Sell him. Combine the transfers for all 3 players and you have half the money you need for Fernando Torres. It seems like Liverpool want to sell their players for the maximum and buy their players cheaply. It won’t work that way. If Darren Bent is worth 17m pounds you can bet Torres is worth 20+. Sell the players, buy your striker and settle the team for a run next season.

Don't panic Captain Mainwering. Marseille haven't made an offer to buy Cisse either they want him back on loan which is why we said no. Benitez has money but he doesn't want to blow it all on Torres which is why he's looking at a part ex.

Read Rafa's, George and Tom's quotes over the past few weeks on the Liverpool website before talking speculating trash! Non of the fans are panicking so why are you???

Above comments from other readers also seem to mirror my thoughts.

Next time you write a piece, do some homework!

I agree with the replies - Bide our time as we haven't got the funds to "do a Chelsea" and just throw money at them.

The difference in negotiation could be the value of an extra player.

The whole article is basically rubbish!

Will you grow up Lucas is not a holding midfielder, he can play there but he is an attacking midfielder, for confirmation check out Tim Vickery's comments on him. Furthermore Marseille haven't offered cash for Cisse they tried to get him on loan. As far as anyone not in the know is concerned nobody has bid for Bellamy and Momo isn't for sale. As for your comments about Arsenal being rivals for Torres, how much do you want to bet he aint going to the Emirates. Another worthless piece of journalism

Sure we want to sell Bellamy and Cisse at the maximum we can get. If Bent is worth 17m I can't see why Bellers and Cisse should go for about a third of that.

My experience with the transfer market is that if you wait to long to make a deal you pay more and if you hold your unwanted players too long you get less for them. There are countless examples of this... just look at the bargain Barcelona got for Thierry Henry at 16m.

This may not be true for each and every player but on average it is. If you were Atletico Madrid, wouldn't you be canvasing other clubs? I would.

Its all rubbish and typical liverpool, we spend too long talking and not enough action... lets keep cisse, the guy is a pace machine, bellamy also has pace and kuyt and crouch can be deadly. our midfield is packed with talent, just need belief, kewell and pennant with gerrard and mascherano/alonso can be electrifying.. the defence doesnt need anything and our goalkeeper is the 2nd best in the world behind cech.
if we sign torres, great, the bloke has a worse scoring record than all our other strikers. the only striker worth buying for £27 million is Eto'o or Henry/ronaldinho, someone who will score you 30 goals a season. torres is another kuyt, no pace, but a playmaker.

I have to say that I agree with the majority here, you're talking bollocks. As Rafa has recently stated most la liga players are still on holiday (Torres gets back july 9th) and as for selling for a lot and buying cheap! I think thats a good deal, too many times have we lost out with money. I bet if we splashed the cash you'd still have a bloody whinge.

I have to disagree with the comments. I didnt want american owners because they dont care about the club. As soon as roman took over at chelsea they were buying players right off. Ya, the price went up but 2 prem titles later who was complaining?????????????????????????????????????????

What utter crap, and I'm not sure if that is about the article or the comments. The new owners DO care about the club, but they're not going to be stupid about the money being spent to get players.

Everyone here sounds like a kid in a candy shop after having found a stack of money. 200 quid for a chocolate bar? Yeah... I can afford that!! Its easy to do when its not your money.

Rafa will spend wisely and buy players for what they're worth, not for the insane amounts that some players are asking. He's being patient.

The difficulty is that these days there are not as many superstars as there used to be. Any decent player has a 80 million tag. So you either take a gamble with some great African players or suffer Nicholas Anelkas brothers. If you have 20 million to spend on a player, it isn't so easy as it should be

Would you play poker with Rafa? I am darn sure I wouldn't. He plays his cards so close to his chest they are stuck there. What with bluff and counter bluff, he is a master. Now what was the article about?

methinks rafa has made plenty of comments about needing to make signing and money to do it

much of this stuff stays backroom I am sure but if he had his way he'd spend the money - get the players we need and quit the shit

how stupid are you lot?

you all know our main targets are in the Spanish league, and that only ended last week. It's not possible to speak to and negotiate with players while the season is still running.

how can you question rafa?
when he took over after hullier, liverpool was a mid table team!
one thing rafa is know for are makig good buys, in liverpool only ones not settling after 1 season is morientes and gonzales,
but im sure with confidence from fans and board they would have been have sucsess.
idunno why billoinares invest in soccer it looks like a sure lose.
idunno a single company ambramovich own or a singel one from our american buyers.
liverpool is the biggest soccer brand in the world.
only reason others earn more is is liverpools lack of succes in last 13 yrs atleast, no other cllub in the world achived less over 15years and stilll have as many supporterd?
no-one!

In My Opinion there is only one club in for Torres and thats us. The player wants to join us and A.Madrid are already looking for replacements.

Nothing wrong with trying to get the right price for him if the player wants to come to us.

I trust Rafa and if he is not panicking... theres no need for us too.

Crikey, every time some dillwad on the internet writes an ill informed 'I know best' type of article we all fall for replying instead of leaving it for the pile of shite that it is.

Articles like this thrive on being badly written and egocentric, as if the person who has written it knows exactly what goes on behind the scenes at Anfield, or knows how football - come on if they did they wouldn't have to write their own flipping blog like this.

And to all the fans that are panicking. Get a flipping grip of yourselves - when does the transfer window close? Doh!!

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!!!

This is a complete waste of time reading the so call thoughtful article. If you are a true LFC fan, just be patient. We are not going to be like Chelsea buying players for some stupid prices. The club cannot sustain that in long term.

All your so call facts are just some cut & paste info from various websites. When did Marseille say they want to buy Ciise outright. How do u know Bolton wants him, you are not Sammy Lee.

I think article like this just make me sick!! Sick to the bones, can't imagine if u call yourself a LFC Fan, put some thoughts before u write such article. Look! This is what u get from the rest of the fans
