Arsenal got shafted on Henry transfer fee

Can you believe the transfer fee for the player that I think is the best striker in the world? 16m pounds? That’s a joke folks, and if I were an Arsenal fan I’d feel hard done by. Barcelona have got a bargain and they sure know it.

The same thing happened to Arsenal with Patrick Vieira’s transfer. A small fee for one of the best midfielders in the world… now Henry, the club’s best player? 16m pounds? Darren ‘done nothing yet’ Bent is about to be sold for that price. How on earth did Arsenal sell Henry so cheap?

I’ll tell you what; if Arsenal sold Henry last season they would have gotten at least 25m-30m pounds for the him. Now they get barely enough money to sign an average striker. News Flash: Arsenal all over Alan Smith! News Flash: Javier Saviola in Arsenal linkup! News Flash: you wuz robbed.

For me, the most bothersome aspect of this transfer is that Samuel Eto’o did not go the other way. All along I thought this would have been a really good deal for Arsenal if Eto’o, younger, quicker and deadlier, could have been persuaded to sign. It appears that Barcelona now plan to team the pair up in what is no doubt the most potent strike partnership on earth. All for a song. Nice, if you can get it.

I am not a Gunners fan, and I’m dismayed, I can’t imagine what you all must be thinking. Arsenal are going to have a tough season next year with nobody to replace Theirry Henry. While Arsene Wenger has made many great deals, this is not one of them and it tells me one thing: Theirry Henry pushed for this deal a lot harder than I or anyone thought thought.

Wrong. If arsenal sold Henry last year they would have sold him for no more than 10 million. He only had one year left on his contract. Get your facts straigth next time

I cant believe wenger has done this. I reckon fabregas will be next, and then i wouldnt be surprised if wenger takes over at barca next year. i think the arsenal board are fcking mad to let wenger let him go, especially to barca

VA VA VOOM HAS NO BRAKES ...... CRASHES IN BARCELONA

why is it that no-one mentions henry was good n lethal when pires, bergie n pat were around to do all the thinking while he ran around doing the magic with his feet . the thinkers are gone and so has henry’s goal/game ratio . let him go , let the kids build themselves their own set of invincibles . peace out henry and look forward to u smiling at us doing well .and oh btw ......... me thinks he aint going nowhere .

we've all seen the way he just goes wonkas when goals of the ol invincibles are scored with the baby's , IMO he's blindfolded himself to playing football with a team and not just HIS TEAM. he aint making waves with the national team , shows how much he can adapt ........ all i we hear is " THE KIDS ARE ON A LEARNING CURVE" !!!!! give them a break , let them have fun on the pitch and u'll see theo n persie produce the magic for everyone to fear . nick(hic)olas will be bendtnered to sit as sub and adey will be called when theres a brawl on the bolton pitch . i still feel fredie n helb are good enough for right and we all just fretting about as bad season . its history and it should be forgotten coz WE DO HAVE A WORLD CLASS TEAM . we've got a nedved in rosick(hic)y , a viera in diaby , a bergamp in fab , toure as vidic , gallas as rio , aaah ... we got a dopey GK ( i'd like niemi) . everythin is rosy in my eyes

Bent is 23 - being sold in the english league - where he already scores goals - when he is sold spurs will recoup - maybe even make money on the deal. In 4 years - Henry will be retiring. It's economics.

Oh dear....what an ignorant numpty who knows nothing about football, transfers or anything!!!

The fee represents outstanding business just like the vierra fee does...Barca will pay 16mill cash up front and will never ever sell him on......He needs to win the champions league twice with them to recoup the money...

Arsenal will reinvest just like they did after...Anelka,overmars,petit,bergkamp,etc,etc.....

Just wait and watch and learn.

It seems to be fans are quite amazed at such a low fee being paid for Henry at £16m. But this is purely because a player at his age can now walk away from Barcelona by buying out his contract after being at the club for 2 years. So if he signs a 4 year contract at £6.24m a year or £120,000 a week today, he can effectively buy out his contact for £12.48m after 2 years.

So why would Barcelona pay anymore as he could walk away and they would make a tremendous loss. The only reason why Real Madrid paid £53m for Zidane at 29 years old is because he previously would not have been able to buy out his contract.

The rules have now changed and the days of paying £40/50m have long gone now for players at 28 years old or over.

2 things, 1st the quoted price comes from barca, it's almost certain that it's way above that, remember seville and reyes.
2nd henry will be 30 in august, even if it's 16 mil it's good buisness he probably has 1 or 2 years in front of him , and will never be as good as when he was 28. As for D.Bent early 20's english , if he was foreign he'd be worth between 5 and 8 mil fact.

6/22/2007 10:56 PM

Price is lower than I'd have hoped, if Eto'o isn't part of the deal, meaning we need to find a 'replacement'.

Last year's quoted fee could be higher for various *possible* reasons... 1) It was inaccurate (as #2 anonymous says); 2) A relatively disappointing, injury-filled season; 3) Last year we didn't want to sell, but this year we do; 4) This year he really wants to go; 5) This year there are other top strikers on the market; 6) Wages will be higher, after his Arsenal payrise; and so on.

Thierry's done great things for Arsenal. I've loved watching him when he turns it on, and wish he could have stayed (assuming he really has left!). But competitive football's about a team performance, so it's no good having the best striker in the world if it doesn't work within the team. (And that isn't me saying he's disruptive.)

Just some random thoughts :)

I do not believe until I see it. But 16m is a bargain any way you look at it. Or should I say a joke. People can try bury their head in the sand and reason that it is OK, but it is not and will not be a good deal for Arsenal. But if we get Gudjohnsen or Messi and they still pay us 16m then it is a fair price.

If Arsenal are flourishing in the league then the loss of Henry will quickly be forgotten. However if Arenal continue to struggle it would be case of I told you so.

anonymous you pillock, barcelona had offered 50 million to ensure we sold him instead of keeping him for the last year, he was worth more keeping him for a year in advertising merchandise etc than 10 million!

This is all hypothetical at the moment anyway but if it does go through then the £16m fee currently being touted for him is clearly bollocks & MK Gooner @11.46pm you are incorrect in your £12m argument. According to these reports he's signing for £130kpw (why would he join Barca without negotiating an increase on his £120kpw current wage ?) so that works out around £6.77m per annum. You say Barca wouldn’t pay more than he could walk away from them for? That’s great, except the new FIFA rules state a 28+ year old player’s contract is only unprotected after 3 years have expired, not 2 years. So by your own logic, Henry should command a fee of just over £20m. & any fee would also have to take into account the % Spanish clubs like Real & Barca negotiate for themselves for players’ media rights & for a player like Henry fairly substantial.

Arsenal are a big club - 5th in Europe. Gate receipts from the Grove are more than the Camp Nou or anywhere else. Arsenal sell players to barcelona when they are past their best - Petit, Overmars. The money for Henry will rise if he scores goals. Barcelona's best player has just reached 150 games for Arsenal, and he cost nothing. Henry was great, one of the best, but life goes on, and even if Wenger leaves next year, the future looks sweet.

I completely disagree with your accessment.
For a player that was bought £10m 8yrs ago, scored over 200 goals, helped Arsenal to win 3 FA cups, 2 P L and get to CL finals, i think £16m at the age of 30yrs is a wicked deal for the club.
My concern is Wenger, i hope he extends his contract cos' with him as Arsenal coach, he will unearth another Henry or a better one.

You said it mate we were robbed.

I dont think it is the end of the world as i think that wenger has a genuine love and loyalty for arsenal and i think wenger will feel exsactly the same as all of us.

we can not buy any body for 16 million pound's as a replacement for henry but have faith in arsene wenger.

Exspect babel and huntaleer to be sighned for certain.

Maybe we could offer inter a few quid and lundburg for adriano.

The squad as it is is ok but the striker's are not 20 goal's a season player's it's as simple as that.

I am lost for word's i dont wish henry good luck i hope he choke's on his 6 million a year at barcelona henry has been planning this ever since he was injured.

Before you go of and committ harry carry remember what happend to anelka and all viera has done since he left is shoot his mouth off about arsenal.

I hope bendtner has a great first season with us next year.

It's a great piece of business you idiot. Last season Henry was rubbish. Yeah - he scored a reasonable amount of goals but anyone could see that he was BURNT OUT and PAST HIS BEST. Also, he's 30 - he only has about a year or two left with 'searing' pace, so as far as I'm concerned Barca are the ones who got screwed here.

Good business.

I luved Arsenal way from the days of superiority in EPL...days of ian wright....Henry is a player i idolise most and will remember him for life. The things he has done for english football is amazing... (im not english, im asia) but i hardly missed an arsenal game..what he has done for AFC is completely speakless... But i guessed a striker's ability can only last for so long, hez 30... unless hez god he will keep playing the way he used to. English game is more intense, I thk Arsene made a rite decision. Itz just that we do not know who is replacing him...I wish henry all the best...and thank him all for the great things he has done for Arsenal... so long henry :(

Two week's into the transfer season and thierry henry sighn's for 16 million it is a joke he has stabbed arsenal fc right in the back and twisted the knife.

He could have quite easy got arsenal an amazing deal from his transfer by inviteing other club's and createing a bidding war witch would have been the right thing to do.

16 Million is a disgracefull joke.

I hope thierry henry fucking choke's on his barcelona contract.

many interesting points raised, shot down and challenges here; my take is,

* arsenal offical website already announced the deal, subject to "...medical and formalities" - well, that's effectively sealed unless henry is 'injured again'

* whatever rules may say, market force dictates the fee (economics as some said here); so if sheva left for 30m, and assuming barca wants henry rather than we flogged him over there the fee should have been higher than the rumoured 16m - hope there are fine, and finer, prints in the transaction

* injury certainly could be used to explain henry's dismal performance last season; i watched most arsenal matches and at times it's embarrassing (just a feeling) to see henry tried and dribbled and got nowhere, in fact, more often than not, the ball was lost or he didn;t even know where it was after a while; or he simply stood there and tried tempting the other guys (defenders), halting our flow completely

* of course henry scored several significant goals (v MU) as well but generally poor performance (over a match) and body language and if people argue henry should be kept to aspire/ be a model for the young ones they might be picking bad habits; in fact, ade already done so as a striker he's now drifting to the left like henry and losing that effect in and around the center

* arsenal is a global brand and like other top companies management must be stable, and rumors got to be squashed somehow; wenger would be negligent if he allows the squad to become distracted by his own contract issue; make a stance before the season starts, qualify it, make caveats, whatever, but say something for god sake

* replacement for henry is not the right approach as there is none; i suppose as intellignet as wenger he'd have thought about the sort of forward/ striker to compliment the existing style of play which is slightly different from the super fast counter-attacking style we used several years back - didn't get anywhere in euorpe with that hence the change but wasn't effective in PL so wenger has to balance it, please do

* watch a couple of U21 matches involving holland; not sure if babel is the right kind- one thing babel resembles henry is he seemed to disappear for periods of time during the match and had a burst of sprints/ shots etc then drifted away; all in all nothing special really, though at 20 there may be potential but that's just like bendtner and bendtner plays for senior (not U21) denmark squad, and scored!

* disagree we have enough striker/ forward as-is; all not proven except RVP; ade, like henry, needs many chances to score one - throw in injuries (surely you can count on that), it's rather depleted; well, even lupoli was gone, for FREE!

* are our young guns push iron? why are they so filmy when supposedly the body is maturing and bulking at their ages; C Ronaldo effectively bulked up in overnight from nowhere; thought we have excellent diet management??

* the other worry is our defence; it's still vulnerable in its current form; unsure how well gallas really is (so far not so good!); and aerial org is a disgrace for all to see; is wenger going to do something about it?

* are we fast tracking merida, vela? it's wishful thinking but like cesc, could we draft them in the first team and hope they make it like cesc did at 16; i assume the glowing reviews for merida and vela to-date were all true of course

well, hope for the best

As a Spurs fan I am delighted, Henry was and is great. When his name was the team sheet you could never rule the Arsenal out.

Cash from the Arsenal coffers is going to be invested in the board and not the player, Arsenal are now 5% weaker and will not keep up with the top three, I can see spurs pipping them for fourth.

THe board have become complacent and as a result they will now struggle on the pitch. The icing on the cake woould be wneger leaving for barca and arsenal bringing back George G or G Souness!

Come on you Spurs.

If Shevchenko was worth £30m then can't understand why Arsenal would sell for only £16m (albeit I understand it may rise to £20m subject to certain conditions). I would love Arsenal to sign Tevez as he's the only player IMHO who would be as exciting as Henry. I just hope that when we flog Reyes we get a better deal.

Just imagine and agree that is the best attack you can probably think on.
I can say it looks like a cheap transfer, but maybe this is not true and this is a requirement that barça asked to show all this as a master hit.
I'm sure Barça has paid more than this

Apparently there would be an extra £2.1 million added on to the fee if Barcelona win the UCL and an additional £700,000 for every year that the full fee remains unpaid. They should have included more clauses in the event that Barcelona wins the league.I believe Man U did the same with RVN.

6/24/2007 8:18 PM

Shevchenko was "worth" ~£30m because he was purchased on a whim by a billionaire with questionable knowledge of football, who was eager to sign someone who was a great personal friend. It was not economically viable. It was the kind of business in the transfer window that will lead to the bottom falling out of the transfer market.

You cannot just throw money around and expect there to be no consequences, even if you are so rich that you are essentially just getting rid of it to avoid paying taxes.

Barcelona know this. They have become rich through doing good business over a number of years, rather than overwhelming investment from a takeover. You cannot compare the transfer of Shevchenko to the transfer of Henry, the situations are completely different. Shevchenko was not eager to leave Milan for a start.
