Remembering Cantona’s greatest goal

Eric Cantona, second maybe only to George Best or Bobby Charlton is the most highly regarded player to ever play for Manchester United. In 1996 he scored his greatest ever goal against Sunderland.

Fed the ball from the right of defense Cantona received the ball between 2 defenders which quickly closed on him. Cantona faked left, retreated facing the second defender, and then turned to face the first defender again, but this time accelerated inside of him beating both players and breaking the midfield line. Cantona then sprinted the ball forward dishing it off to Brian McClair on his left and continued his run.

McClair dutifully passed the ball back to Cantona in the most classic of 1-2 fashions leaving Cantona with a defender and the keeper to beat. Cantona did that and then some by the most elegant of chip shots that bounced of the top corner of the goal and into the net.

In typical style Cantona surveys the ground in a self gratifying stare and lifts his arms letting everyone know he is was not to be considered washed up.
