Sunderland swoop for Tottenham striker

Sunderland have lodged a suprise 9m pound bid for Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

Defoe looks to be 4th choice next season as the 16.5m arrival of Darren Bent from Charlton has marginalized the player and placed his career with Tottenham in doubt. In all honestly, he should leave as his chances will be limited in the coming seasons. In my mind, playing regularly trumps a big name club.

Portsmouth, Aston Villa and West Ham want to sign Defoe, adding Sunderland to that list gives the England international options. While its unlikely he’ll choose for a club just promoted, it does stake a price claim on the player, similar to what West Ham did to Tottenham with Darren Bent at 17m pounds. Beyond being just promoted, the competitors for Defoe all have greater transfer budgets.

What the offer does say is Sunderland intends to stay up and is willing to bid for players in a higher price bracket.

Defoe, somewhat stubbornly, wants to stay on at White Hart Lane and fight for a place but unless the squad is plagued by injuries it just won’t happen for him. Berbatov is untouchable leaving just one spot for 3 qualified players. Defoe must also consider his England ambitions: somehow being a 4th striker on the team sheet will not endear Steve McClaren.

Clearly written byn someone who knows very little about Spurs.

Defoe started plenty of games last season, scored 18 goals and is not "4th choice striker" but is actually "one of 4 strikers".

a SUBTLE DIFFERENCE WE CANNOT EXPECT MORONS LIKE YOU TO UNDERSTAND

Jermain here:

Why are you kidding in the first comment, I am 4th choice and just a nose above Mido. Spurs should sell me and and use the cash for a left winger and give someone from the youth setup a chance.

everyone knows a big money signing moves up the pecking order regardless of talent

Sorry but that article was real nonsense! Spurs will play upto over 60 games next season, it is IMPOSSIBLE to suggest that Keane and Berbatov will a) be inform and unchallengeable for the whole season. b) playing THREE games in SEVEN days regularly. c) this is also supposing during the whole season they will sustain NO injuries!!
The whole point of competeing with the top clubs is to have players, top players, willing to fight for their place. Defoe has gone on record saying he wishes to do so

Sunderland may have bid for him, but I am sick of these Defoe stories always saying he wants to leave or he has to leave or he doesn't get a chance.

this would be a good deal for both clubs and a great move for defoe. Moving to a much bigger club like Sunderland, getting regular first team football, would surely further his international career.

Why on earth would he want to sign for a team that will probably be playing championship football after this season. With so many prospective games + any injuries he will play his part at the Lane next season.

Everything at Sunderland is geared towards champions league, not championship. We have best training facilities in country,2nd best ground in prem (after arsenal), 4th biggest ground in prem, most passionate fans in prem, best chairman in world, and ROY KEANE !! S.A.F.C....the sleeping giant awaketh. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Why would defoe want to go unless history were to repeat itself. Do a runner when the redstripes get relegated like the spammers did

Everything at Sunderland is geared towards Champions League? Are you on drugs? All I saw in the early part of last season was a half empty ground and a goalkeeper constantly picking the ball out of the net. All that balls about the north east having the best fans is total shite. Newcastle were playing in front of a half empty stadium in europe, Middlesbrough couldnt fill my front room, and what have you won in the last thirty years between you? Not much at all really. Get a grip.

A mad Irishman screaming at the players might get you out of the championship, but boy are you lot in for a shock on the opening day, you have never seen the like of Berbatov. He will rip you to pieces before your unemployed mackem eyes. If god played football, this is what it would be like, BE AFRAID, BE VERY VERY VERY VERY AFRAID>

Read that numb nut. I can't stand Spurs and their arrogant fans. You've done nothing for years except splash a load of money that'll get you nowhere. Arsenal will always be one step ahead. Bite on that.

You are clearly ill-equipped mentally to exchange views with Premiership fans. I wouldnt waste my time with reading your local shipyard retard unemployment figures. The point is that your foray into English footballs elite will be short lived, and you are clearly a pillock.
