Arsenal sign some Croatian guy to replace Henry (video)

Excuse me for never hearing about him, but Arsenal have just signed a player named Eduardo da Silva from Dinamo Zagreb. Indications are he’s a decent player and now I do recall he gave England fits when they played Croatia in a friendly a while back but beyond that I am left wondering just how exactly a Croatian ended up with the name da Silva.

To start, he finished the Croatian season with 34 goals in 32 appearances, an impressive tally in any league. He’s signed a four year contract for the Gunners and the fee is rumored to be in the 5m pound range. In total he scored 73 goals in 100 games before leaving the club.

The new Arsenal signing was born in Rio de Janeiro, so to answer the name mystery, that’s it: he’s born Brazilian but has a Croatian nationality. Da Silva moved to Croatia in 1998 at age 15 where he joined Dinamo. He was loaned out for a pair of seasons back to Brazil. After returning to Croatia, he made a slow climb into the squad until the 2004 season where he became a regular and was named the Croatian league’s player of the year. He also won the honor in 2006.

It looks like maybe Arsene Wenger has pulled another player out of his hat. Nobody saw this one coming; personally, I thought Arsenal would sign Obafemi Martins. I must admit, it does look a bit odd to replace a player of Theirry Henry’s stature with a player we’ve never heard of, but sometimes the lack of expectations will lower the pressure on a new player at a new club. With low expectations, we could all be surprised. Still, like many of you, I was expecting a big name.

So what did you sign? Looks like a goal poacher to me. There seems to be a hint of a natural eye for goal and he appears rather fearless. It looks like a response to Arsenal’s lack of ability to finish last season. Here is a video of your new player:

What a load, we sign some nobody player to replace TH? I dont believe this. This means we dont have the money to spend on a striker with a the right attributes. This guy belongs at Charlton, not us.

I can't understand why we must sign big names to get there! Tell me one big name that had 34 goals in 32 games, not minding the league! I'd suggest we relaxed and hope this guy delivers and settles immediately into the league. I'd love Martins too but then let's face reality. We're winners next season and onwards

It's a well researched transfer, this much is certain. What is the point of all these rumours, if this is the result, though: http://thirdgen.wordpress.com/features/pointofrumours/

You just have to love Wenger.

"it does look a bit odd to replace a player of Theirry Henry’s stature with a player we’ve never heard of"

A player that we've never heard of? You mean like Henry himself when he signed up?

Or like Vieira, Petit, Edu, Lauren or Gael Clichy when they came?

Nobody saw this coming indeed!
I've been banging on for weeks that this guy should come in and strengthen the squad. Even before Henry left. With 73 goals in 100 games, including one against us in the first competitive game at the Emirates means he has the potential to be brilliant. I'm really really pleased that we've signed this guy, Henry may not be forgotten but I think this guy will excell at Arsenal. Him and Van persie up front. Our young kick ass strike force. tbh though we need another striker. But at least we've got Bendtner & Adebayor as backup. But we have lost Henry, Aliadiere Lupoli & baptista. In fairness Bendtner replaces one and Lupoli barely got a look in. And Baptista was shit but I still think we need 1 more striker. So so far its Fabianksi, some danish defender and Da Silva. Next its Sagna to strengthen our defence and we still need a winger. But we're well on our way to a shit hot team!

Looks like another Van the man to me, Nisteroy i mean, could be an excellent buy! What you guys need, him and van persie up front, id be scared!

I'd heard of all of those players except for Clichy

A player without a name is not necessarily a bad thing, its just a risk

I am from Croatia. Da Silva is good player with natural feeling for goal. 5M seems OK price.
Btw. his goal against England was not in friendly game, it was Euro qualification game.

1. Likes scoring goals - will not prize an assist as much as one in the back of the net.
2. Makes runs and invites the through-ball - not passing round the edge of the penalty area hoping something will happen.
3. Poacher - happy to take the ugly ones as well as the spectacular or technically brilliant.
4. Seems to be looking for it - note a good few rebounds, and simply being in the right place.
5. Scores with his loaf - and he isn't even a centre half!

REALLY looking forward to seeing him at Arsenal... let's hope he isn't another Franny Jeffers!

wenger always signs people with little rumour of them beforehand. This guy is a goal paocher and a good one no doubt, plus Wenger likes to sign players he can develop, not the finished article which is why probably no chance of Eto'o coming. Need more goals from midfield though, as Hleb lacks Pires scoring touch and the goals have dried up for freddie and Rosicky hasn't scored as many as he was supposed to. I think up front is pretty ok, with this guy, Van P, Adebayor(kanu), Bendner and Theo, but could do with a non-african player as it will be bye bye kolo and eboue come the African Nations!

Im Dinamo Zagreb fan and Eduardo is a great player.
All the goals he scored this season and he scored many, he scored for the box so he is a similar player to Ruud.
Just so you know the rumor in Croatia is that Arsenal bought him for 24 mil. euro.
With little luck he could be you new Henry

€24million are you sure? SHIT and people are slewing us because we paid 16.5 for the premierships highest scoring englishman :|

anyway moving on.....

He doesn't play like an horthodox striker; he plays like an attacking and support striker, position from which he scores a lot of goals. He enjoys free rule and his assists record looks very good for us. So he is not just a goal scorer, but he can actually help others score goals.
I prefer this type of signing than the galaticos approach.

u prefer the "i dont know who or what the fuck this guy is but ill pretend hes brilliant because my club is skint" kind of player?

come on now really... the goons expect to be up there in the echleons of the premiership while only signing players from the 3rd world?

its ridiculous.

arsenal are dying... long live the spurs.

hope you enjoy playing leeds in a few years.... will bring back memories of when you were both good teams.

Check out the yidwanker.
You can sign whoever you want from a first division team.
You have never and will never finish above the arsenal, thats a fact.
You have a shithole ground, which is by a dump with shit supporters (carling cup both games).
Remember the Carling cup????? Full strength Spurs against 17/18 year olds
THE KIDS, THE KIDS, THE KIDS'LL BEAT THE YIDS.
And they did!!
Da Silva has played in the Champs League and scored there and Internationally against that fat c*nt of yours in goal.
Bent ever done that.....i think not you fool.

he could be a great signing i know its only the Croatian league no disrespect they beat England after all,but its a very young league but he seems a natural finisher exactly what we need.I think we just landed a Van Nistolroy on the cheap.

Couldn't have seen it coming from any angle.... Anyhow, it seems like anti-climax with all the big-names such as Tevez, Martins, Anelka linked to us. But i do have complete trust in Arsene - can't see him going anywhere wrong with his transfers. I do hope for a big-name one before the start though :)

da silva plays for a 3rd rate team! jezzzus a lot of 3rd rate teams from europe do!

You have never and will never finish above the arsenal, thats a fact. - FACT? ok back this up with evidence as fact means there is evidence to prove..?

bent 1st division is that a fact?? hmmm Charlton were premiership team the last time bent played for them......

da silva aint shit is he really? you see this is what gooners do they wont accept that they have nothing.

we will finish above you... can you not see this? its not just us saying it.. its the rest of the premiership.

your managers gonna jump ship next year and then we have elland road 2.... the sequel for our mates in cashburton.

we are in the process of bulding a new stadia which will be superior to the new library.

so come on keep goading because come august you'll be playing uefa cup football.

have a nice day.

Could you name me the last time you finished above asenal. The last time you won the league, the last time you played in the CL, the last time you won a cup of any sort???? Oh yes, the worthless cup against Leicester wasnt it? When Sol was ur captain?? ha ha
Smart man Sol, come to the gunners and win the double in your first season. Stay at spurs, win fuck all and look like a cunt! ha ha
Look at the ratio in interatonal games. Impressive. Ratio on Bents international games? Has played for his country once i think. And he's worth £16.5m. Well thats about how clever you lot are. Makes me laugh, really does.
Even in the world cup sven would rather take theo than bent. that says something about his trustability. I could go on all day!!
You are shit, always have been always will be. We have the same shit from you at the start of every season, and you are always shit at the end of every season.
ha ha ha ha ha ha
The children beat the yids!!!

The 'kids' excuse is run real dry. Sven taking Theo was as clueless a decision as the peodo buying him. The kid's crap and you know it. The truth is the whole team has fallen apart, you can't hold on to any decent player.
And all this about Eto coming to you lot is a joke...I can really see Eto chomping at the bit wanting to play with Fabregas..!!!
You won't even finish in the top 4 because you aint a top 4 club, you are ther now with the likes of Bolton Spurs and the like...

go on continue.... seriously you cant even spell international LMFAO dumb dumb cock and you have the gall to question my intelligence?

talk about wasting money.... how much did jeffers cost you? sorry repeat that?

also walcott... how many premiership goals/games did he play before signing for 11 million? in fact how many games has he played since?

dickhead.

we arent talking about history coz shit if we were then we'd have a lot more previously successful teams then a lot on here.

as once was said to us i shall repeat to you... dont live in the past for there is no point, live for next season. i promise you that you won't be forth... whether spurs are or not Arsenal have no chance.

im still waiting for the factual evidence that you will finish above us again?

7/02/2007 3:23 PM

haha the yid is makin me laugh, there was talk of us signing bent a while back and at the time i could only hope that it was a rumour, thank god it was. Even better, not only has he not signed for us but for the yids and at a snippit price of 16.5 million haha. Best story of the summer so far hahah. Also the talk of us goin down hill and Sp*rs finishing above us, well i do believe evry player (Except paptista, and Jeremie) that helped brush them aside(with ease ) are still here so, think you should have spent that 16.5 million a bit wiser. im still laughin though and im glad you have.

7/02/2007 3:29 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually - Walcott cost an initial £5M - the rest of the fee is based on appearances and success.

So please get your facts straight Spurs fans..

And we will see who is finished come the end of the season...

Same every year - you come on to Arsenal blogs and make comment on our team instead of worrying about your own..

Sad....

lets dissect the genius that is white:

"we arent talking about history coz shit if we were then we'd have a lot more previously successful teams then a lot on here."

um, more successful than stockport, maybe. Not more successful than Arsenal. Hear that, lily boy? At no time, in any era, over a sustained period, have Spurs been more successful than Arsenal.

"as once was said to us i shall repeat to you... dont live in the past for there is no point"

hold on, werent you just making a point about spuds being sucessful in the past? ( but less successful than Arsenal, at any time.)

"live for next season. i promise you that you won't be forth... whether spurs are or not Arsenal have no chance."

Prove it. And where exactly do you predict spurs to finish? Do you think you'll take fourth, or not? If not, are you looking for third, or accepting fifth? How about lower? I predict sixth for Spurs this year, myself.

I am living for next season, TYVM.... looking forward to pour reserves knocking you out of the cups, and finishing above you in the laegue AGAIN.

henry was hardly unknown.... more so he just wasnt as good.

factual evidence based upon history? hmmm so basically what your saying is that you'll finish above chelsea aswell because "previous seasons" you have done....

BOLLOCKS.

just because you did it in the past means nothing now, thats the thing its like saying because england won the world cup in 1966 they can win it again... ITS A DIFFERENT TEAM YOU COCK! you havent played this spurs team and we havent played the afrifrench array of arsenal as it stands.

you are trying to base next season upon the history of seasons gone by... fuck me if it were that simple thered be no point.

still waiting for the factual evidence? No? i thought not.

its as simple as this, find one supporter (not a goon) who agrees with you and ill shake your shit caked hand.

i never said we would factually finish above you but based on depth of our team in comparison to yours we will. its pretty well documented on every website not run by a goon.

arsene knows? first statement i agree with.... he knows that its a sinking ship hence the non signing of a contract...... he knows that arsenal have run out of ammunition

my croatian not's great but it says there he got 10 assists as well as 34 goals. good record, but strikers are confidence players, and when english defenders get a hold of him, as is the english way, who knows how he'll react to begin with.

we may have to watch him squander a million chances before he scores. sounds a bit like someone else who's just left.

how can you judge a player without ever seeing him play. ive seen him play twice, he scored both times. against england and arsenal. 16mil is crock, was about 8mil. i look forward to seeing the lad play and hopefully sticking a few away. and dont bash on about being henry's replacement, hes just arsenal's next striker. bendtner, vela and walcott all have a claim to be the next henry.

and we've always got adebayor to wheel out against spurs. he loves to score against the yids. no henry and you couldnt beat us in four.
