For some reason Newcastle buy Smith

Newcastle United have made an agreement for Manchester United striker Alan Smith to leave Old Trafford in a deal worth around 3.5m pounds, exactly half of the 7m pounds United paid Leeds United for the player just 3 years ago.

Apparently Sam Allardyce failed in an attempt to sign a trio of players at once from United; he wanted to sign defensive pair Wes Brown and Mikael Silvestre as well.

Smith has been assured of a regular place on the pitch at Newcastle under Allardyce. Why, I don’t know. Alan Smith is a useful player but he’s another striker that doesn’t really score goals along the lines of James Beattie, Juan Pablo Angel, Mikael Forsell, and to a large extent Milan Baros. For my money, 3.5m could have been better spent especially as Mark Viduka has joined Newcastle earlier in the season. Maybe Big Sam has plans for Smith that don’t involve his being a striker, ala the extension of the experiment at Manchester.

While Newcastle may have beaten out a few clubs to sign Alan Smith, I am not sure they didn’t just beat themselves in the process.

your right there.

I wqas quite surprised as well that newcastle want him.

Where will he fit in as they have 4 quality strikers in their setup.
Shola Amoebi
Michael Owen
Oba Martins
Mark Viduka

why they are getting a fifth striker beats me :S
unless he has some odd formation which uses three strikers upfront i dont get it.

Shola Ameobi is not a quality striker, and it's pretty obvious that Owen doesn't want to stick around at SJP any longer than he has to. If Big Sam can get Alan Smith fully fit perhaps he'll be able to fulfil some of that early promise he showed at Leeds?

Oba Martins can leave for 13Mil, Owen for 8Mil, Viduka is old and fat, Ameobi is rubbish

Smith will be doing all the running, ball holding up and team work that Fat Boy Viduka never lowers himself to think about....exactily like their time at Leeds.

Big Sam has always liked to play 4-3-3 and he can see Smith as a perfect foil for Viduka + Owen/Martins.

still a bit concerned tho that he is adding to his squad but not addressing the fundemental problems of the 3 D's : Defence, Defence and, you guessed it, Defence

don't jump the gun here.

NUFC have said they are surprised by this story as it's the first theyve heard of it, and it seems the story has originated in the north west.

even if it is true (which i have my doubts it is) he'd be a good signing for that money. He could play wide right of a 433, which seems to be allardyce's favoured formation, viduka/own in the middle, and martins on the left.

stranger things have happened.

In your judgement of Smith being a striker that doesnt score goals.. Look at him when he was up front with Viduka at Leeds.. It speaks for itself

You are going back 4 years in the past, and 38 goals in 170+ appearances for Leeds United is hardly prolific. Thats a ratio of less that 1 goal in 4 matches.

CANT BELIEVE YOU LOT !!!! How harsh !!! Smoth at Leeds was very young, HOW MANY YOUTH PLAYERS now bulge the net consistantly, NOT MANY. This lad is EXACLTY what NUFC need. We have seen 27m wasted on people who have no interest in putting a decent amount of sweat and blood into OUR SHIRT, this is one guy that wont do ANY BUT that ! Milner, his old mate, we have a cracking hard mentality yorkshire contingent here. This lad has class, whilst he has bite and bark. LOVIN IT !

Smith is better than ameobi and owen. Martins is a gd player and viduks is classy (if a bit lazy with it). Smith and Viduks looked gd together at Leeds, so reckon Big Sam might be looking to pair them up. Anyway Owen and possibly Martins will be leaaving and Newcastle would do well to get rid of ameobi as well.......

Get Smith in NOW c'mon lets face it Owen hasn't came out and said he's happy at Newcastle apart from Shearer sayin he's staying, personally i think h's only staying to proove his fitness and then leave us in the sh*t in january and sign for Manure or the Scouse, And for Martins take my word as soon as juventus come in for him or any other club offering more £££ eg Chelski he'll be off in a shot LOL (never trust an Nigerian)who doesnt know his own age.
We need players who WANT to play for NUFC because at the moment the two named above clearly don't.

Is that the promise he showed at Leeds United the same promise you Geordie's used to call thugery when he pulled on the White shirt?
Nowt like a two faced football supporter eh? You'll only just go behind Manure fans in being two faced with comments like that against a player you slagged off when he played elsewhere!
Oh yeah wasn't Viduka a fat Aussie t**t before too? LOL
