The best goal of the 2002 World Cup
During a group match at the 2002 World Cup, Uruguay’s Dario Rodriguez scored a dream goal from a volley that for me was head and shoulders the best goal of that entire tournament.
The goal came from a corner on 47 minutes with Uruguay down 1-0. Jon Dahl Tomasson put Denmark ahead from a low cross from the left side footing it first time.
The clearance from the corner landed at the foot of a Uruguayan player who tapped hit with his foot, knee, then foot again to lob the ball across the box where Dario Rodriguez unleashed a stunning volley into the top left corner of the net with the outside of the left foot. 5 touches and the ball never touched the ground. The keeper didn’t have a chance in the world and it’s probably my favorite goal from a volley ever.
Uruguay would go on to lose 2-1 but not for lack of beauty and class.
