Anderson over Carrick? You must be joking

Anderson over Carrick? Is there a joke I haven't been let in on? Is Alex Ferguson getting senile? Manchester United are starting to favor him and I can't see why.

Owen Hargreaves is finally fit and all summer I'd expected a pairing with Michael Carrick in midfield as Paul Scholes started to fade with age. It hasn't happened yet and the underwhelming Anderson has been getting the starts and Carrick has been sitting on the bench.

What gives here? Especially after a few chosen words about how the young Brazilian had not been developing? I don't understand it. A couple of weeks ago I watched Anderson closely in one of his first Premiership starts, I counted about 8 aimless and badly reasoned passes out of about 10 and thought: hmmm, its to the reserves for this one. Actually the opposite has happened and I don't get it. Especially since I saw Carrick's performances labeled sloppy.

While Carrick and Hargreaves are both more defensive midfielders, I actually thought it was a good idea to play them together, especially since you have a pair of wingers in the team (Nani and Ronaldo) who aren't noted for their defensive attributes (actually, Nani is a better defender than I give him credit for). My logic was that a pair of sturdy central midfielders that pass the ball well would serve the side better than a traditional playmaker, especially since Ronaldo and Nani wander centrally and Tevez drops back a lot (too much actually).

While you can't argue with goals, and United has scored a lot of them recently, you can argue that Anderson didn't know much about them save for a couple of decent setups. For my money, I would continue to give Carrick the chance to play slightly more upfield and see how it goes for a while.

Anderson has not imopressed me either. I alwats thought AF would rotate PS with OH and MK central and CR Nani and RG on the wings.

Actually the reason United has scored alot recently is because Rooney and Tevez are starting to play well. United has been scoring despite Anderson and I agree with the author, he shouldnt be in the side.

I'll have to disagree with you on this one. Anderson is better player now than Carrick will ever be. You just have to give him, time to adapt, and Ferguson needs to put him up front where he can be more decisive.

As a FC Porto fan, I can tell I've never seen a young player with his talent and, mainly, with his tactical awareness. Ferguson should put him playing in a more offensive role, either in the centre or on the left wing.

is the author of this article crazy? anderson has been playing awesome since he came on during the wigan game and been getting praise from everyone - from fergie, to his teamates, to the pundits. Have you been watching United recently? Keep watching and you'll very soon see the (serious) error of your ways

thats true since anderson has been playing united have been winning plus anderson has been playing well and he is young as well!!!
give him more time and he will be world class player! look what he did when united played arsenal he stopped cesc and helb
so what are you lot talking about?

firstly carrick has only just come back from injury so he would have been a bit rusty after fracturing his elbow.

and secondly, in the last few games anderson has been one of our best players and created the majority of our moves. besides a few dramatics, he was great against arsenal, and was devastating against dynamo kiev in the 4-2 game.

he is only 19 and yea it has taken him time to adapt to the english game but the fact of the matter is he has come on leaps and bounds.

the great thing about this years utd squad is the depth of talent, especially in the midfield. sir alex has been forced into a few options as of late but everyone who has stepped in has shown their worth, including simpson and pique who have both been impressive every time i have seen them.

don't knock anderson, he is great, but rest assured when carrick is in a full bill of health he will be getting the nod over anderson, but i still think fergies ideal partnership would be hargreaves and scholes.

Anderson has missed a load of passes. I think I recall that spell the commentator is talking about. I thought Ferg would substitute him. I don't see alot of talent yet. Looks a bit lost to me. Carrick should start.

Anderson's been great! He's 19 and played a only a few premiership games. His team mates and manager who know much more than all of us clowns, have singled him out for praise. Let's give him a chance b4 we start ripping him to pieces. As long as we win and play well, I don't care who plays. As far as Carrick, 90% of people seemed to think he was rubbish until he scored against Roma. Oh we United fans are a fickle bunch.....

I can't believe this. Anderson has been outstanding. The most creative midfielder we have had in years and combatative to boot. Carrick has been injured. So has Scholes and Hargreaves is only just back. At the moment, I think our best option is Hargreaves and Anderson, but they will both be rotated with Carrick so all three will play an equal number of games. Anderson's standard will inevitably slip at some point during the season (he is only 19). Hopefully, that won't happen until Scholes is back. To mind mind, he is the heir apparent to Scholes and it won't be too long before he gets chosen over Scholesy in the big games. The guy is an incredible talent and was an outstanding buy.

Absolutely ridiculous article. Anderson has done brilliantly when called upon. I thought against Arsenal he was a top performer.

Either way it's great for us to have top class competition for midfield places

Clueless!! Anderson looks like a hell of a buy, dunno what games you've been watching!

So few games and he's already making a big impression on nearly everyone apart from the moron who wrote this article.

Carrick will still play plenty but Anderson is only 19 and should get better and better.

11/09/2007 2:28 PM

Oh my god... where to start?

First, Anderson is one of our most consistent and efficient passer this term, second only to Paul Scholes who is currently injured... and his tackling is much better than the Ginger Ninja's, as much as it pains me to admit it.

Secondly, Carrick was injured until the Arsenal game. Surely not even someone with as little knowledge as you would include him in the starting eleven for such an important game? He started against Dynamo Kiev though with Anderson confined to the bench and that was the only game this season when both could be considered fully fit and available...

And really, it's quite baffling. Last season we've been told we had made fools of ourselves by signing Carrick who is nothing special. Now he's cited as a great option - but I suspect only to give a platform for slagging another new signing, this time Anderson. Hopefully he'll prove wrong all you ignorants out there as Carrick did.

Look, you dumbshits, the guy is right

The kid is 19, this is the biggest club in the world. If he blows a few situations, its not the same as a winger doing it. Its down the spine and much riskier getting counter attacked

He has talent but has a long way to go

The writer of this article is on drugs as far as im concerned. Both have thier strengths and weakness and you could quite rightly argue the case for both depending on your view point but to say Anderson has had nothing to do with the clubs recent form is laughable. The man has been playing centre midfield, you cant have a central player perfroming averagely and get the excellent team performances we have seen recently it just doesnt work like that

11/09/2007 2:48 PM
Blogger Football Commentator said...

Bollocks you cant have an average performer in central midfield and still perform. Are you suggesting one single player can influence a team so greatly? I dont think so.

I can recall countless games where a central midfielder is not performing and the team still doing well. I mean, talook in your back yard, Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea come to mind. Lots of 5's and 6's there with a 3-0 scoreline.

Again, my position is that United's recent run of form has much more to do with Rooney and Tevez linking up well than Anderson. Watch the games again and forget when he gets it right, look at how often he is out of position.

11/09/2007 2:54 PM

Let's not forget that he has had to seriously curb his attacking play as he was used to at Porto, but I don't see the problem in giving the ball away sometimes in trying to create something. If we wanted someone to play the ball sideways all day we'd still have Phil Neville! The number of times Tevez drops deep and loses the ball is uncountable.

Anderson is a very good player now and a legend in the making

Anderson is awesome.... anyone who watched the wigan game would understand that he a brilliant player. He tackles a lot better than carrick and passes better.

All you glory hunting fickle fans should give Anderson a bit of time to adapt to the prem. He's only 19 and is better than Ronaldo was when he first came to the club. To the fans that never been to a match and focused on Anderson cant really say anything, he does have similar qualities to Paul Scholes if you watch him off the ball.

Notice in the match against Kiev we werent at our best, against a Kiev team we completely outclassed in the match in the Ukraine. Is it ironic that although we scored 4 goals ( and could have conceded at least 2) and looked unconvincing in periods of the game, that this is the game that Anderson was dropped for? I know Carrick is the best passer in the team, but his uncanny ability to become invisible in big games is why I think Anderson has much more potential and will eventually be a first team regular with Hargreaves, ahaead of Carrick. FC you need to take all the factors into account when you are judging a new foriegn player still getting acclimatised to the club....

Carrick has been injured for a start and been average anyway.. i like anderson's style and he brings alot of energy to the team.. however, carrick is experienced and his positional sense is a lot better than anderson's.. let's just be glad that we have the choice! reds for europe!

This article shows a distinct lack of thorough research. Have you actually been watching the games? Anderson has been tremendously effective for us. He turned the game when he came on against Wigan and produced a couple of man of the match performances in subsequent outings. One of them away from home in Europe against Kyiv. His team mates have been raving about him as has Fergie.

If you are going to choose to be a football commentator then please make a much better effort at actually knowing what you are talking about. All I can is that thank god you don't have any decision making ability at OT when you'd consign gems like Anderson to the reserves.

As for who should start alongside OT then it will probably be a case of rotation. Now that Rooney is out for a month I think we will see Saha and Anderson rotated at Tevez's partner. Where the youngster will give you another lesson on his talent and versatility.

This is ridicolous... Anderson was fenomenal at Emirates while Carrick has been out injured. You saw a 19 year old giving away a couple of passes in one game and you´d like to send him straight away to the reserves? Wonder how many passes Scholes, Butt, Beckham, the Nevilles and Giggsey gave away when they were coming men and 19 years old! Com'on... give the lad a chance for God sake! He´ll be outstanding for us in the future.

His first game if you watched it was against sunderland, when he was only given 45 mins due to the nature of the game, utd going through a rough patch couldn't score at that time. Since hes been playing his movement and passing, esp his throughballs have unlocked defences, he's starting everything from deep and his willingness to get back and help out the defence as well, easily MOTM against Wigan and the first leg against Dinamo Kiev he was immense, you need to open your eyes and realise he is an outstanding youngster

Carrick has been hurt, Hargreaves has been hurt, Fletcher has been hurt, and Scholes got hurt. So Anderson has featured prominently in the first team, and he has DONE WELL.

You clearly haven't watched a Man U game for a while. Carrick has been injured until last week. I have been really impressed by Anderson. At 19 years of age he has really looked composed while playing quite a defensive role for the team. Can u remember Ronaldo or Giggs playing such a role at that age??(take into account he played against the undefeated league leaders last week with only 4 or 5 games experiece) Please watch the games before making such foolish claims. Anderson will be fdantastic for our club(if all naysayers will give him a chance).

The author of this rubbish is completely brain dead. What games have you been watching mate? All I've seen in the last three weeks is Anderson running up and down the pitch getting involved, making tackles and great passes. Carrick on the other hand did absolutely nothing in the two games he has appeared and has learned from Paul Scholes (circa 2007) how to slow the game down and make back passes. He plays like a coward, afraid to make mistakes. Anderson is the future and Carrick will be dealt to another team by 2009 at the latest.

The author of this article shows he knows nothing about football, the difference between Carrick and Anderson is the same as carrick and fletcher! it's called speed of thought anderson moves the ball faster than Carrick and carrick moves the ball faster than fletcher. It sets up bettter attack opportunities for the likes of ronaldo, nani, tevez etc. You also get the feeling with anderson that so much more is to come but you dont get that feeling with carrick. so my vote is stick with anderson we are better with him in the team and we ill get better as the season wears on!!!!!

If you watched Anderson closely in ONE of his first outings, it might've been handy to follow up on his other performances before painting him with the brush of being a bad passer. He's been the metronome of the team in recent weeks and the similarity of his quick, incisive passing to that of Paul Scholes gives me goosebumps. This is the first time in years I feel confident without the Ginger Prince.

Listen i dont want to be disrespectful or anything, but sometimes i wonder whether here anyone watches football. How in this earth could someone say that anderson hasnt been playing well. Its the same old story of supporting your own bunch. Just cos carrick is english doesnt mean you need to defend him till death. Anderson has much more natural class than carrick could ever dream of. You need to open your minds guys. No good fooling ourselves. We need to win and we are doing that and if you were to watch andersons last 4 matches you will have to accept he has played an important part. But if we want to return to carrick fletcher midfield go ahead. Im sure many europeans will be scared of us. Especially Barcelona lol

I agree with the blog, Carrick should be playing over anderson, he is far more reliable and more supporting to the forwards!

11/12/2007 5:10 PM
Blogger Randy Watson as Bob Digitech said...

Carrick may be more reliable in as much as he's maybe less inclined to attempt a difficult pass, but he certainly doesn't possess Anderson's attacking instincts. He plays a decent long ball, but he's most comfortable sitting in front of the back four, as is Hargreaves.

Playing both Carrick and Hargreaves, without Scholes or Anderson to bring the ball forward, will require one of the forwards to sit deeper to link up play, disturbing our attacking rhythm. Starting two holding midfielders provides extra defensive cover we won't need against Bolton, Derby and Fulham in the next few games.

Both Carrick and Anderson have the vision required for central midfielders. Hargreaves does not. And Nani is just another liability who interferes with the flow of the play.
