Transfer window peters out, sign of poverty

Hmm, I had the feeling we’d see more movement in the Premiership as the transfer window closed. The only deal of note was the transfer of Jermain Jenas from Newcastle to Tottenham Hotspur.

In other leagues like Serie A, the Bundesliga and La Liga the same is true: very little movement.

Even having, for the first time, an English Football League transfer window made little impact on the Premiership’s little brother. Even a quality defender like Oliver Bernard, with no transfer fee was only signed on the last day by Rangers in Scotland. In the transfer market three, four years ago, a player in his situation would have been snapped up.

It’s a sign of the growing poverty; nobody has money because it’s going towards financing club debts, and the ones not in debt were certainly frugal.

Tottenham were the only exception, signing Jermain Jenas from Newcastle (obviously Newcastle needed some money, quick) in a five year deal. Jenas joins Michael Carrick and Edgar Davids, so I’m wondering what they have in mind since the 8m pound price tag is no bargain and Davids looked great alongside Carrick. Are they spending 8m to have a new player sit the bench?

The cycle of debt (or piling on more) often begins with the promise of a big money signing paying the club's debt back with a place in European competitions. It’s a huge risk Newcastle are taking bringing in Michael Owen for this price, considering there was Dirk Kuyt from Feyenoord. I think Newcastle paid thru the nose. Let’s not forget the upside, and in United’s favor, he’ll be able to play the way he plays best. Still a huge risk, but let’s see how much time this buys Souness and the team’s management.

As for the transfer window in general, ...eh.

I have to disagree with you here.

Davids doesn't look at all great alongside Carrick. They both run at the same man, they both play defensively, which leads to no support in attack ( game versus Blackburn: zero shots on or off target ! ), and when one of them actually runs forward, the others does so too, which leaves place behind them.

Easy to think negatively that it illustrates poverty amongst clubs. It is better to think of this as a free-market correction that will continue over the next few years. Supply of players outstrips demand and player wages MUST surely fall from the stupidly ridiculous levels they are at, and paid for by us fans & debts, IF the players waiting to be bought want a job in the game.

If a player wants a game, his price has to come down. The current situations emphasises clubs are cutting their cloth according to their income and not trying to live beyond their means.

As in real life, you cannot live on never ending credit. Nor can clubs. Clubs should never have to fold if they get the maths right. There'll always be a supply of players - I mean fans alone will play for nowt - or so many keep claiming!! :-)

I watched Carrick and Davids together against Chelsea and saw Davids playing a much more attacking role.

Carrick is willing to sit at the back and graze pasture. I think Jol is doing smart work playing him more forward.

LUAFC -

The current situation is unsustainable. But I think the only real way out is to have a similar system to what you get in Spain. At Real Mad. you can get a season ticket for peanuts in comparison to the Premiership.

Samuel-

I say a bit of what you mentioned against Chelsea, but they will sort that out, Davids is adjusting to a new league and team. He's been around long enough to sort it out.

I consider you to be right to some degree, but I also share the view of the LAUFC commentator that there has been a degree of market correction. However, as with the financial divide of clubs there is also a growing divide in the salaries paid to players, with the top stars earning excessive amounts.

It is unsustainable for many clubs because costs are too high. However, the recent Deloitte Touche report highlights that Premiership football clubs are doing OK after the collapse of the transfer market. Unfortunately prem clubs don't spend money on lower league players so their money does not filter downwards.

For cheaper season tickets (which I agree), wages must also come down first. Unfortunately in England, fans have been all to willing to pay silly money to watch a match £30+ is ridiculous really. A prem game should be £15 tops.

Until fans stop going to games in thousands, then prices for tickets will remain high. We need a boycott overal several seasons before prices come down in real times. Unlikely!

i'm a pissed off spurs fan. i've been giving them gooners a whole load of stick cos i finally felt we were better then them. it was all good after 2 games but now we're back where we always are. i know we're still a point clear but they've played a game less and played chelscum away. will we ever match them?

My fellow Spur have faith.. we WILL catch up to the Arse. Historically we have always been the better supported in North London and around the world. ..only the last 15 years Spurs have been shit and now we are playing catch up somewhat...

Right now, (Chelsea fans excluded) we're probably the envy of every other football fan in the land.

Better still, we're catching up in the right way(getting better players and coaches in while keeping those important books more or less balanced).

Can't wait for the game against Liverpool!

COYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LUAFC & Anonm. -

I agree with both of you, I think that it's a cart before the horse thing.

At one point in the past the player became too valuable, and triggered the debt cycle. I cant predict precisely a date, but it was some time in the late 80's. Since that point the compounding irresponsibility has grown to the point that most clubs cant even afford a role player.

Debts (caused by institutional overvaluation) have increased player transfer fees at a pace that would make even Visa proud.

In 1995 it was unaffordabale too, but the difference is there was enough credit cushion for spashing out. Not anymore, that's the correction we're seeing.

Not only the goal, Chelsea can park a bus in front of the transfer market as well.

you've been in the moon ???

Chelsea splashed 40+ million, Newcastle spent more than 30, Spurs got more than a half dozen new players etc.

Do you watch any footy, or you just make up these stories from the bushes????
