Ajax too much

I found this interesting reading; I thought I’d pass it on.

It’s about Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Rafael van der Vaart who has perplexed many in the Netherlands with his surprise transfer to German club Hamburg SV.

Hamburg is noted for not being noted, but interestingly that is what the player wants.

The pressure of Ajax, his club since childhood, was too much.

Read the BBC article.

Many players have a difficult time at the ArenA, where the home fans can be extremely critical (the team often seems to be more relaxed and perform better away) and the national media focus on all things Ajax. He didn't have particularly harsh treatment from them, but he's had a lot of expectation placed on him, perhaps unduly. I can really understand his decision. He's just married and wants to be able to continue his private life and professional development in peace.

The same thing happened to D Bergkamp at Inter Milan. The press there were all over him so he left.

True, but I think vdV had considerably more pressure, as he was the top player (at least most scrutinized player) on the top team (at least most scrutinized team), and he was "native."
