Gerrard: delivering the ball

Have you noticed how amazing Steven Gerrard’s passing range is?

Against Holland the other night he made a low pass across the field in the opposite third that beat the back four and about two other players. The only caveat is that Shaun Wright-Philips couldn’t get on the end of it. Even though it didn’t connect, it reminded me of how many other times he has made such decisive passes from all over the field that worked.

Gerrard has a particularly devastating low ball, often connecting perfectly from 50 meters. He often uses the low pass with pace in a switch of play. That fast switch tends to open defenses and leads to chances on the other end as Wright-Philips almost found out.

The only other players at the moment which can match his passing ability are Frank Lampard at Chelsea, David Beckham at Real Madrid and Barcelona’s Ronaldinho. Paul Scholes, Kaka, Nedved and a few others come close too.

My God, you pick out aliverpool player to praise his passing and don't mention Xabi Alonso!!

im a fan of gerrard, but the Spaniard's passing, in my opinion, is doubtless superior..

also, he may be retired now but Lubomir Moravcik (latterly of Celtic) was one of the best passers ive ever seen...

Ah, excellent point, Alonso is an excellent passer, not Gerrard, but very close.

Sorry, but as a Liverpool season ticket holder I can tell you that Alonso's passing is superior to Gerrard's.

We may get to settle this as Benitez says Alonso may return for the final month of the season, further strengthening my belief Lpool will snatch the last C league spot.

You left out Pirlo at AC Milan, especially for the longer passes, picking out Shev or Crespo. Camoranesi also deserves mention this year for his crosses.

Gerrard's passing can be very impressive, but he still gives the ball away too often.

Liverpool's record without Gerrard in the team is better than that when he has played this season.

Strabge, but true.

Did you see the Guardian article debunking his mythic statusHis premiersoccerstats data although not telling the whole story do not indicate that he is either that superior to Alonso or having a particularly outstanding season

I didn't see alot of Alonso during the beginning of the season, but as you can see, I did write about him a while ago.
