David Moyes needing reality check after checking video

James Beattie was red carded yesterday in a match against Chelsea for a head butt.

I thought Everton manager David Moyes comments after the loss were lunar. James Beattie clearly head butted William Gallas from behind, not once, but twice.

Beattie’s comments on their own put him in contention for lie of the year, but to have the manager defend the behavior by claiming it didn’t deserve a red? That’s one head butt too far.

"I don't think it was a sending-off, I've been a centre-half in my time and I would have been ashamed to have gone down as easily as that.”-Moyes
Doesn’t David Moyes realize that a head butt, even a feint (as Aston Villa’s Lee Hendrie was recently red carded for), is a strait red? So let's not waste time deflecting the conversation into Gallas’s reaction then.

In the video you can see Beattie chasing Gallas down extending his head with the intention to make contact. Beattie said it was “accidental contact” and Moyes, even after seeing the video again said:

"I have seen the video. I have never heard of anybody butting somebody from behind while you are running after them.”
And

“I will certainly not be punishing James Beattie”

Maybe it just confirms that Moyes is blind, and fails to identify which is the real issue in the red card - the head butting or the reaction.

Davis Moyes's comments are almost as bad as the incident in the first place. For Beattie to then accuse Gallas of foul play is even more of a scandal - he should be punished by the FA for accusing him of diving!

At least Moyes admitted to seeing the incident - Wenger would have denied it even happend with his, "I didn't see it" stance on everything

One thing we Evertonians know about David Moyes is that we can trust him always to be honest in what he says. I saw the head contact. I thought the sending off was correct. As we now all know, Moyes continues to be honest. He has admitted he made a mistake - and Beattie will be fined. How many other managers (or referees) are as open and honest?

I have also read he admitted he is mistaken.

That is good that he did so, he is a good guy, I think, so I was very suprised when I read his original reaction.

Yep, he's admitted to being wrong, which is nice.

Personally, I think the most interesting part of this is Beattie's apparent belief that if an opponent is shielding the ball, he's allowed to run over the top of said opponent. Two words, mate. 'Playing distance'.

Davie moyes has retracted that earlier statement and replaced it

He said: "Having had some time to reflect and, perhaps more significantly, having now had time to carefully study video recordings, I believe I should set the record straight by conceding the dismissal was right and correct."
Beattie will be fined two weeks' wages for the first red card of his career and misses three crucial games - this Saturday's FA Cup clash with Manchester United plus Premiership games with Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers.
