West Ham and the stupid signing
“Unrivalled stupidity" is what outspoken French national coach Raymond Domenech's calls Julien Faubert after news that he decided to join West Ham from Bordeaux.
"I can't understand Faubert's decision apart from the financial point of view. When certain players call me to talk about me their transfer I tell them it's okay to play for one of the top four clubs in England, Germany, Italy or Spain, but this is stupidity. What a pity when he is on the verge of the French team. I have trouble understanding it." -Domenech
What I have trouble understanding is how the pedigree of the player’s club should affect a decision of a coach to play him in the national side. It’s a sort of bigotry to say that since you didn’t leave for Manchester United and play Champion’s League, then you are ruled out.
I think it’s more stupid for all of these players who join elite clubs with little chance for a starting role and end up with their names carved on a bench and leaving two years later for half of what they signed for and a career to recover. That’s stupid. That's what will likely happen to Yossi Benayoun.
Faubert, 23, has made one start for the French national side so far and looks poised to start no more while Domenech is coach, impressed in his first pre-season friendly this weekend. He played 45 minutes of and will play again against Austrian side Sigma today. With both West Ham midfielders sold, the position is wide open.
The Hammers paid 6.1m pounds to Bordeaux for Faubert who originally wanted a move to Rangers and had refused to train at Bordeaux when he was denied the transfer.
Frankly, this is none of Domenech's business. Faubert should be judged on his performances and not whether he earns more money or not, something I am SURE no player cares about.

Totally agree - nice to see someone
that is looking only at the football point of view, and not jumping on the band wagon of criticising WHU.
The french coach is obviously stupid.
jaque chirac in drag, or whatever there president is called
Domenech is just like the Argentine coach who said that Tevez was an idiot playing for West Ham and look now, about to sign for the biggest team in the world and one of the most talked about players, whatever the reasons.
Domenech is widely regarded as a bit of an arse in France and now we can see why.
Didn't the late un-lamented SGE say very similar things about English players needing CL football. Where did that get us, an England team playing without pride or passion and brain-washed by their club managers into believing that CL was the highest level to play at (and most lucrative). Personally I would love to see an England side without the prima-donnas.

How the hell did Raymond Domenech become a coach for a team like France, faubert has more sense than the idiot Domenech, It did more good than harm Tevez playing for WHU, now he is wanted by the the worlds elite. Faubert will make Domenech eat his words, like the Argentine coach did when he critiscised Tevez and Mascherano for playing for the Mighty Hammers.
As for benanyou, I agree with the article author, He made the move too soon, and alot of 07/08 season he will be warming the bench in the Reds dugout. But i have to say goodluck to both benny and Carlitos, The Mighty Hammers will miss you.
typical french comment, better to play for a side who's going places next season.
Brilliant article and spot on.West Ham in the not so distant future will further their ambitions, and with signings like Faubert things are looking up.If every club in the top four managed to get every player around then what competition would there be left.It would be just the same old thing over and over again.Brilliant to see this article not trying to rip West Ham apart
what do you expect to come out of a french snob's mouth
