Bent on a price: a never ending saga

You’d think 16m pounds is good enough, considering that’s what Henry’s transfer fee was, but no. Charlton Athletic are insisting that the only acceptable sale price for Darren Bent is 17m pounds. Tottenham must have their hands in the air at this point, and if I were them, I would give up.

In my view, the price is inflated to begin with. Darren Bent is talented, but not 17m pounds talented. I always felt a price of 12m pounds was more than enough, but wealthier men disagree with me. If I were Tottenham I would save my money because I think they are ok up front with Berbatov/Keane/Defoe. Darren Bent would be a nice to have, but at these top dollar prices they are half a step from the Fernando Torres’s and Samuel Eto’o’s of the world. Even Michael Owen or Obafemi Martins would be better value, in my opinion.

Some reports say have stated that Tottenham have ended the negotiations, probably not true, but Tottenham should send a shot across the bow to the Addicks and start shopping for other strikers. Bent won’t just go where he’s told (rejected West Ham) and not everyone has 17m to toss out for the player. Charlton will bend on Bent, but Tottenham tend to be a bit trigger happy at times in the transfer market.

A meeting of the Charlton board stated that:

"It's 17m or no go"

I’d say no go then. The valuation is way over the top. Charlton’s poker game could easily end up backfiring. In fact, it should. We are not playing with Monopoly money.

Bent is worth £17m to Charlton if he fires them back up into the Prem next year.

Tottenham should move on though, they have 3 good strikers and could blood the talented Lee Barnard next season as the 4th.

Chalton will be the one to come out of this the worst. Bent will eventually leave, and Spurs will buy a striker for way less than what we were going to pay Chalton. In the end, greedy Chalton will have to continue paying Bent's wages and the wages of the other 2 strikers they had bought in anticipation of replacing Bent.

17 million p for a striker with a couple decent seasons under his belt for a mediocre team and suddenly hes's worth more than one of the best strikers of modern day football, and the best striker ever in the premier league. i hope that no one buys him, and he gets stuck in the championsip until his price drops down to 8 million p. because thats what he's really worth. you look at the players to compare with, not only henry.

nani and anderson - roughly 17m each.

Ronaldo (AC Milan) he is still one of the best, and has proven it at ac, he was like 9m.

then you have van nistelrooy, 12m, 1 goal shy of golden boot.

then you have a player who is proven, but is young and improving, and is completely unique in ibrahimovic, who only 1 year ago was transferred for 17m p.

bent isnt even a regular intrnational, which all these players are.

bent for 17m p, you avin a laugh.

Bent is only required as a squad player although I do envisage him being selected ahead of Dimitar berbatov when we play the lesser teams at home. Makes sense to rest the 1st choice striker when possible.
However there are other players who could fulfil that role and so we should move on.
Biggest reason to persue bent is if we think that berbatov will leave at the end of the 07/08 season. If that happens we may be greatful for his services as an experienced prem player.

let's be honest, if bent was coming from Serie A and his surname was Bentio and not bent from Engalnd, then people would be clammering for his signature at whatever the price.
All of these fancy foregin names seem to get the cash burning in peoples pockets.
I will eat my words if Torres comes here and gets 30+ goals in 2 seasons.

Lets take a look at newcastle with Albert Luque or whatever. He has done well, and then there was the lad from Man u who went to villareal. Big money players who have not made it here.
17m is too much for Bentio, but he is worth more than the 8-12m people are asking to pay. To charlton he could be worth far more than the 17m though if he fires us straight back up. Hence the silly money price. It's a hands off warning in not so many words.
Good luck to spurs next year by the way. really enjoyed watching your games.
Martin jol though has been perhaps your best signing in the last 10 years closely followed by Berba bastard sent us down. sorry cant bring myself to say his name.

Someone needs to talk sense to Jol. We should not buy Bent for anything more than £12 million, which is even over inflated at that. There are better strikers out there we can get instead of throwing money away at strikers who are nothing more than potentials. What we need now is shop for a keeper to challenge Robinson and a left winger.

we should move on
17m pounds is way over the top and Charlton are just trying to use us. it's time to look into other options. Dean Ashton? Oba Martins? and i tell you what...we need to work on persuading Berbatov to stay at the moment

What if Berbatov only wants to stay if Bent joins him, how much is Bent worth then?

But Berba didn't say that.

I think the problem in this whole story is Defoe who is refusing to sign a new contract.... The board are therefore trying to get a replacement in before letting him leave. However, on balance, I think Ashton or Nugent would represent far better value for money. At half the price of Bent, Nugent brings similar finishing ability and power in the air. Ive seen him live for the U21s and the boy has raw talent in abundance. Even a crack at Freddy Eastwood for 2 million must represent better value than Bent at 17 million???

Bent is an £8 to £10m striker. Charlton are being very greedy and don't care if they risk screwing his career to rack up the price. He stayed with them in Jan to try to keep them up and Varney gave him his word he could go where he wanted if they didn't.

Good article! Let Charlton keep an unhappy player who won't give one hundred percent in every game and he'll be gone for 8 million in January, just what they deserve.

They don't see a good deal when it comes along. It's like keeping hold of your shares cos you're watching them go up and up. You think that I'll just wait a little while longer and get as much as I can for them; until you wait too long and they start dropping and will never reach those dizzy heights again.

Fuck 'em you can pick up much better players for 17 mil. What we need is a left sided midfielder like Drenthe and a class central midfielder like Decco. Get Vieri on a free until January and pick up Bent for 8 mil in January :D

No way in hell is Bent worth that amount of money!! PLEASE, Martin, Daniel and Damien...
I even think £12M is too much for him. Defoe is, in my opinion, a better striker, and we really shouldn't splash that much cash on a fourth striker. We phreakin need a left winger; have done for YEARS.
It'd be interesting to see Lee Barnard, but for some or another reason, that doesn't sound too comforting either. Bet he's still better than what Mido appeared to be, though.
Bent is a proven player in the Premiership, and that's important. But not £17M important.

WISE WORDS IN YOUR ARTICLE. WEST HAM ARE THE INSTIGATORS OF THIS PARTICULAR NONSENCE AND IT'S ONGOING REVERBERATIONS. WE WILL ALL REGRET THIS IN THE FUTURE

Just maybe Charlton don't want anyone to buy him, unless someone offers (like wham) this sort of money, unlike charlton of old, maybe they are tring to keep the better players (unlike when they sold Parker- Murphy) under the new managment team.

Bent would get a hatful and I don't want to see him go elsewhere. What worries me is that if he signs he'll get stick before he gets a chance to settle just because he has taken darling Robbie's position. Bent will outscore Keane and Defoe - mark my words.

Please, for god sake and the Spurs fan sake, don't spend all that money on Darren Bent! Don't get me wrong, he is a decent striker, but we need a quick, skillful left winger instead - we have 3 decent striker and 1 god in Berbatov! What we don't have is a class left winger who can supply this stike force!

So, to the board of Tottenham Hotspur, please use that money to buy our much needed left winger to complete the puzzle! Then once that has been achieved, and only then, we should look at our strikers.

Now is the time to take advantage of the situation that has happened to Arsenal and clinch that 4th place, because if we don't (and pray it doesn't happen) we may see a Mr Berbatov decide to leave!

COYS!!!!

What do you mean back-fire on Charlton? They are in a win win situation as long as Darren fulfills his contract. If he goes they get more money than he is really worth. If he stays they get the services of a player they currently can not afford to buy.
