Fernando Torres

Fernando Jose Torres is to Atletico Madrid what Thierry Henry is to Arsenal. He is the symbol of the club and one day may even play along side Henry as Torres is one of the most coveted players in Europe at the moment and certainly has the Gunners attention. Deep in debt, it’s not be a question of whether Atletico sell Torres but more when and how much. Soon to need a replacement for Bergkamp, Arsenal: this is your man.

Atletico Madrid went thru a torrid time in 2000. Once considered inter-city rivals with Real Madrid, the nine times Spanish champions drop down to the second division for the first time since 1934, spending 2 season before achieving promotion back to the top flight. As recently as 1996 Atletico were league champions, winning the double under coach Radomir Antic that same season.

In that awful 2000 season a bright spot shown, they called him El Nino (the kid) as he was Atletico’s youngest ever player, goalscorer and eventually became Spain’s youngest ever international. Torres was given the team captaincy at the age of just 19 and today, at 21, he’s clearly Spain’s hottest prospect.

He’s an extremely pacey player, very direct, with a nose for goal. Torres is also strong in the air and possesses all the classic qualities cherished by Premiership managers. In addition he’s 2 footed and moves brilliantly without the ball, something Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger cherishes.

Just before the transfer deadline Atletico rejected Newcastle’s 25m pound plus bid for the player, but it’s just a matter of time before someone swoops him up. It wouldn’t surprise me if it were at Arsenal, as Torres plays alongside Jose Reyes for Spain; Reyes has also recommended the player to Wenger.

Torres's price would make it impossible

Torres is a great player and I for one would love to see him play in the Premiership.

It is amazing to think that he is still only 21 and just think what he will be like in say, four years time.

Fernando Torres is an incredible striker, Arsenal would have pulled off one hell of a transfer swoop if they manage to sign him. He would be the perfect partner for Thierry Henry and would light up the Premiership week in, week out. His style of play would be perfect for Arsenal and Arsenal's style of play would be perfect for him.

this is random speculation,

but if we were to attempt to sign him i don't think the price would be a problem. wenger wants gems in the side, and will only sign those special players like baptista and
robinho. arsenal offered around 18 million for either of these players. i don't think the price would be too much considering we'd have moved into el grove by then.

really an excellent blog.Torres would be an incredible signing for us but personally i really doubt the club is willing to pay the money atletico wants, shame really because that kid will be the best stiker in the world one day,if he's not already.greetings from greece

Really good blog ?? What makes this a good blog because it certainly isn't accuracy. We will never shell out the kind of money required to buy a player of this stature as much as i would love to see this kid in our team. I cannot decide if we have money to spend and wenger won't spend it cos he's waiting for the perfect "prodigy" to groom (and if so he is a fool) or if the club are really skint. I still feel that there are other area's than need to be addressed before we look at the strikers department - centre midfield & keeper. Much as I like Lehman this has to be his last season with us and I for one would already be sounding out casillis (??) for a bosman at end of this season and i believe that we should pay him whatever he wants cos he would still be a cheap buy

If Henry left Arsenal then there is good chance Wenger will spent that kind of money on a new striker.

Henry WILL leave Arsenal. as much as i hate to admit it but we are not going forward but backwards in trying to bed in young players. that will take time TH14 will be 29 next year he wants to win things and barca are openly courting him. the new rules re contracts will eman TH14 can buy his contract out next year for about 4mill penuts if the buying club picks up the bill.

peeps need to get a reality check TH14 owes no alligience to Arsenal and has to think of his acreer. given a choice of playign with ronaldinio and co as to playing with cygan and co is not much of a choice.

enjoy TH14 as this will be his last year, Arsenal will sell him rather then lose him for nothing the following year.

we keep being told we have money to psend yet we keep buying bargain basement players.

i think the club is cuting costs and getting ready to renegotiate its loans on emirates.
once that is complete then we will see Arsenal spending till then get used to seeing kids and 2mill prodigys. forget the torreses and othe 20mill players.

robinio and baptista were ruses to try and take the flack for selling PV. we never stood a chance of signing either as robinio had professed his love for madrid and baptistas pssport situation meant he would not leave spain.

they siad trust us, we do but show us some courtesy and dont treat us like spuds fans whos club is forever saying they will sign top players and instead sign crap.

We are forgetting one thing and that is Chealsea. Their nr. 1 striker is Drogba so I think that if Torres became avalible then Chealsea would not think long about buying Torres, making it impossible for any other club to go for him.

Forget Torres RVP is going to be as good if not better. He is already close to being first choice for holland and its only a matter of time till he clicks wit T14 and fufills his potential. Not a goal scorer like Torres but Very creative and more skillfull than him. there not many with his talent around for the price we got him.We should only go for Torres if Henry wants to go. And if Henry is sold it isnt the end of the world look at all the players that have left that i thought could never be replaced. (Seamen,ADAMS,WRIGHT,OVERMARS,PETIT,ANELKA,SILVIHINIO,KEOWN,ROCASTLE-RIP,ETC).
ROBIHINIO himself admitted he would have made more money had he chosen ARSENAL so we did table a serious bid for him. Baptisa only had our offer to condider until Real Madrid were alerted to the passport situation and his head was turned (unlike boby pires who chose us when real stepped in).
so u cant really say that it was a publicity stunt by the club to divert us from the viera sale.

well u could look all over for someone u think is the right guy to partner henry but still not get any body as perfect as Torres...i've watched him play anumber of times and his by no doubt just what arsenal need and need really soon...

Ballack, Casillas, Trabelsi, there are a lot of freebies around worth looking at in the summer. I have a feeling that Baptista will miss out at Real and be sold in the summer. Then he will have his Spanish passport and can come to Arsenal cut price.

GunnerPete says ....hope your right mate, because with those four AFC would play Chelski off the park, and probably win the treble. BUT, we all know AW, if there is a chance of getting 4 top men, he will land only one! Lets hope its a goal scorer.

I'd love to see Wenger buying a good player to strenghten our feeble squad. I am mostly disappointed the way the tranfer campaign was conducted in these two years as we went from bad to worse. It would be a great boost also to us supporters with the New Emirates Stadium just round the corner ! ! !

I do agree with Jacey, Titi will leave one day, probably 7 or 8 years from now as long as Arsenal will need him. As for Torres, i saw him play for Spain and he looked the better link as compared to the rest. But he is not yet in the bracket of 25m.

i still we should get Torres on
June when we move to new stadium

and snap Casillas for free on Jan.
(sign pre-contract?)

if reserve team/youngster is not
going to "mature" & "grow" into
the 1st team soon,then i think
& agree we need anohter center
back (& maybe a center midfield)

C'mon let's not be silly, there's no chance we will sign Iker Casillas and it's highly unlikely we'll sign Michael Ballack.

Julio Baptista can fuck off for all I care, I wouldn't want a player who rejected us to come crawling back to us and for all to be forgiven, he can rot at Real Madrid.

As for Hatem Trabelsi, seriously he is a shit defender, he is alright going forward and has blistering pace, but Emanuel Eboue is a far, far better defender than him.

As far as I know, Casillas and Ballack will most likely keep with their clubs.
I also feel Fernando Torres is way overrated. By no means a great finisher.

henry to stay at arsenal for the rest of his career, huge blow if he left ,wud leave the moral in pieces, torres wud b a gr8 buy to partner henry nd VP, 3 up front??

Erm, its all fine and well banging on about how great he is. But if you look at his goal scoring record then for someone mid way through their top flight career he's just not actually that good. This long standing poor goal scoring record coupled with a massively over inflated sense of worth, both of himself and his clubs value of him makes him a propect to avoid.

arsenal can make a deal by sending reyes and a cash for torres or reyes and other player (maybe ljungberg). i think that it is good deal if arsenal sends in madrid reyes and ljunberg for torres, and to make a bid for joaquin, and aguero.
