Arsenal rumors point to Sol Campbell

Rumors persisted around Arsenal that Robert Pires or Freddie Ljungberg would be the next players to leave after Patrick Vieira’s exit to Juventus.

Sol Campbell might actually be the player leaving the Gunners. The reason why, I think, is that Campbell is not willing to risk his World Cup 2006 prospects and at the moment probably feels under a lot of threat for his place.

The durable central defender missed a large part of last season to injury which gave Swiss international Philippe Senderos a chance to emerge. At the moment Campbell is working on a calf injury which means Senderos will start the season.

Newcastle United have admitted they would package Jermaine Jenas in a sale which included Campbell.

Personally, I’m hesitant to change the starting lineup because of an injury. You’re comparing a few months of good form with an entire career. If Senderos didn’t exist Arsenal would be perfectly happy with Sol Campbell.

In fact, I don’t think Arsenal should sell a single player. Pires and Ljungberg have value to the squad and so especially does Campbell. If a sale does take place, it’s because the player wants it. Arsene Wenger stated that he has no interest in selling Campbell but that is what he said with Vieira. With Campbell the circumstances around a move are a bit different but the right ingredients certainly exist to push a deal.

It is obviously not Freddie, or we wouldn't have bothered with the new four year deal.

Its Ljungberg not Lunjgberg. Anyway, Fred has just signed a new contract extension which will kept him til 2009. Pires, is keen on staying except for Arsenal strict contract policy somehow had depleted his desire, though i felt its totally fair for him to signed a new 1 yr contract extension due to his age, just like Bergkamp did all this time. And he did stated how he will re-open the contract talks this December.

And the chances Sol will be leaving Arsenal are rather slim since Arsenal still need to rely on his vast experience especially in the European comp. While Sendo continue to progress,IMO he still far away from establishing himself as Arsenal's main CB due to his inconsistent ball distribution and he did commit silly error sometimes .But if Sol does leave, it will be next summer, and i can bet my money, that there will be no big departure apart from Vieira's.

I wouldnt call Sol "durable" in fact he is the exact opposite. He's injury prone.

Going thru the motions! Thats pure scandalous and an insult. The dude loves London, and according to his official supporters club, arsenal.se, he continue to restate his loyalty.
If there's one guy who never have problem commiting himselves and trapped in the silly transfer speculation, It's Freddie Ljungberg.

Dont get bent out of shape...

He treated it like a preseason game like most of the other players did as well. Reyes played badly, IMO, and I didnt say FL played badly.

Do you have anything sensible to say? The squad is pretty young and lacking experience, Arsene Wenger is not that stupid to release one of those three. He needs all the "winners" to guide the young guns through this season. As for the Ljungberg going through the motions comment maybe he/she should have stopped switching over to Big Brother then he could have seen the game besides its a warm up friendly.

Fred was decent last night!

Yesterday's worst performers -
Bergkamp (every pass was wrong)
Reyes
Pires second half
Senderos

Best performers -
Henry
Pires first half
Bentley

That is YESTERDAY only, not saying that someone is good and someone is crap generally!

I dont know how the rest of arsenal fans feel but I have a bad feeling about this season. Yes we have some superb youngsters coming through and I personally feel if Cesc in particular continues with his developement he will become the greatest player to grace Highbury. However for the very first time I feel wenger may be getting it wrong not signing any players. Am I the only one who feels that we need a decent keeper, an experienced midfielder and something a bit different up front?

I dont know anything about this Viera(goalkeeper) bloke and am not convinced by PBD. We need a bit more quality through the side, we had a small squad already and thats befpore we sold PV4 got rid of Pennant, Edu ect. We have added hleb but thats it. We have 2 domestic cups, europe and the premier league which has become alot tougher with most clubs strengthening. As much as I hate them scouser in red, I feel they are going to be good under Benitez, Cheski scum have strengthened again and will be favourites under mr know it all and man u are always in the mix despite all their troubles. I suppose realistically we have to be content with qualifying for the champions league this season till the young ones have beefed up a bit

Agree with you there on Owen, why not? He is going to want a move now that those Real Cocksticks nicked our beast. Wenger has always been on the lookout for a fox in the box , nows his opportunity to get one of the best around thats english, young and available . Not sure about the partnership with henry though...

we need more strength in depth:

- Another forward, owen - proven goalscorer with international experience. RVP looks the most promising up frot apart from Henry but we still need something different.

- GK, we need an understudy/backup for lehmann. Stuart Taylor would have been fine IMO

- Midfield, Edu & Vieira now missing. We look very lightweight in Midfield. Ok with Fabregas and Gilberto we might be ok but we are fu*ked if there are injuries.

I don't have the answers to who we should buy but we really do need to. Van Bommel would have been quality in nidfield for us.

Wenger please stop smiling on those TV interviews as though everything is rosey!!! We need some transfers in as soon as possible!! FOR FUCKS SAKE get some transfers in before the season starts .I think all gooners are absolutely pissed off with no action and our rivals buying players all the time. The youngsters are not good enough yet to win us honours!!!

why the fuck is everyone panicking!!! YOU lot watch one match and assume that we're too lightweight in midfield !!!! thats complete and utter BOLLOCKS. You look throughout the Arsenal side, and we have a competant replacement in every position apart from goalkeeper, but Wenger has already stated that he's in the market for a stopper. We have a good squad of about 23/24 players that can do the business. This crap about finding a replacement for Vieira is CRAP as well. Surely le Boss can convert Campbell into a cente-midfielder(although a little late in his career), he is a centre-back and pushing him up a bit can't do him any harm, as he can string a few good passes. If not playing a Camp-Senderos as defensive duo could be ok, then putting the versatile Toure in the centre with Gilberto. Come on we all know the guy used to play there and has even trained as a striker. His passing, sheer strength, goalscoring touch and surging runs easily fit the bill(The description reminds me of that bap dude that we couldn't be bothered to sign). We scored plenty of goals last season so bolstering that area isn't necessary. All

03-04 was an unbeaten season. AW has asked that we remain optimistic and give him the confidence he deserves. i'm with him - no questions asked.
i don't know what he is upto but after being the best procurement/reseller in arsenal's (and probably UEFA's) history (PV4, Anelka, Overmars), I think there are more tricks up AW Gandalf's sleeves!
there's a birdie in my ear telling me the new lot will emulate the Man.Ure class of '94 with success.
Lehman is a class of his own - I am sure he will pull through for Klinsmann's nod and if Campbell really wants to get Sven's grin, he'll be watched more frequently in London than in Toon town.
Come on lads, Emirates Stadium is almost complete - a depleted squad isn't what will give Highbury a sendoff and ES a welcome.
Litter-pool, Ever-bum, Man.Ure, R'otten-ham and Chelski have strengthened their squads - this will be a very very very exciting season.

Are you lot all nuts? whats this nonsense about campbell in midfield? Have u lost all sanity? Yes Wenger has an unrivalled knack of proving us all wrong and deserves to be trusted. However I have a bad feeling that if we do not strengthen and then our key players are injured or suspended then what? The youngsters were magnificent in parts last season and the talents is there for all to see but they would not have had the same impact without the solid experienced winning mentality of the players around them. those believing lehmann is world class and campbell in the middle are deluded, that may be good enough for a mid table team but not arsenal trying to catch up a freak of football in chelsea. we need quality and we need it soon!

My faith in lemon is zero! We need a new first choice goalkeeper and not a nutter that costs us games with moments of madness. a defender that can play both centrally and on the right would be useful as well as an experienced midfielder - a fighter who can take games by the scruff of the neck and turn them around when needed. Cesc is magnificent and can provide simple clean passing neccessary for our countering football and the invisible shield is another huge player for us even if he does not get the credit he deserves but I see no natural leaders no bull in that midfield and all top teams have them - AC have gattuso, Manure - Keane(if aging) Liverpool - gerrard chelsea - lampard real - gravesen - u get the picture...Arsenal erm well we did have but but um ..well u see my point

Those slagging freddie should have another look at last nites game again - henry never bothered and pires was total crap (not just in 2nd half). Its all very well saying we should trust wenger but how can he sell our captain and the only physical strength in midfield without having a replacement lined up and by that i mean someone commited to joining us unlike beast. We need a big signing now

Personally i think we are all screwed. This is the beginning of the end for arsenal football club. I can't believe none of you seem to realise how important Viera was to the team. Add to that Edu leaving, we are now left with an incredibly lightweight midfield. It will only take an injury or two and we can say bye bye to a champions league position in the premiership this year. Considering less than 12 months ago we were the premierships best team, we have fallen so far behind chelsea its untrue.

Many teams have improved this season and this is the one year i'm not looking forward to the great london derby. Spurs have improved much over the past 6 months under Jol and i can see them being a real threat to the 4/3/2 spots if they can overcome their consistancy problems. Liverpool have also improved a little, whilst we are just going backwards.

Why oh why are we so shite?

All i can say is thank god Man Utd havent bought many players this summer. They are just as rubbish as us this season.

1 Lehmann
2 Lauren/Eboue
3 Cole/Clichy
4 Campbell/Senderos
5 Toure/Hoyte/Cygan
6 Gilberto/flamini
7 Pires/Reyes
8 Cesc/Hleb
9 Henry/Lupoli/Quincy
10 Bergkamp/Van Persie
11 Ljungberg/Bentley

Apart from goal-keeper we have cover in every position. In fact if we sign Christanaval and Song as cover players, we only need a goalkeeper or as Wenger says someone who will make a difference. That someone would replace one of the above. The most important thing is a goalkeeper

I can't f*cking believe you people saying we're rubbish and this is the end. This is the same thing the "pundits" said before 03/04, when Wenger signed only Clichy and Lehmann and Manure splashed out for Ronaldo, etc. If you want to measure yourself against those northern monkeys, remember what the pundits said about winning with Beckham, Butt, Giggs, Scholes, Neville. The kids are only going to get better with experience. We may struggle to keep up with Chelsea's point-setting pace this season, but it's hardly the end.

The way that a lot of you are talking, you'd think that the premiership trophy was given out based upon how many £s you spend in the off season, not by how many points you earn during the season itself.

AW knows that if success is to be purely based upon who can buy the players with the best reputations then Chelsea will win everything. Hands down. No argument. With just a twitch of Abramovich's petro-dollar laden cheque book.

Aw's solution (and the only solution that there really is, if you think about it) is to stay out of that game. Buy players without the sort of reps that would be on the Chelsea radar and mould them into something better. Buy talent young and nurture it. Carefully forge a team and not just a collection of supertalented individuals.

This season may be relatively unsuccessful for us. However, it may be a lot better than most doomsayers have been predicting. I still have faith. Either way, the longer term gameplan is spot-on.
