Mourinho’s mistake

No, I’m not commenting on the three substitutions that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made a halftime yesterday against Newcastle, although it was a mistake in my opinion. Mourinho’s mistake I want to mention took place a couple of weeks ago when he suggested on camera that the Premiership was theirs.

Since that comment, Chelsea has been playing as if the Premiership was in the bag, which in part led to a loss yesterday against Newcastle in the FA Cup. Losing Arjen Robben (or anyone else)is not the overriding factor here, Chelsea were on fire before he joined after missing a good part of the season thru injury. What seems to be happening is that as a team they are coasting.

While its possible Chelsea is simply in a lull, I think it’s in large part to the manager initiating the lethargy by hinting at a trophy.

Losing Wayne Bridge and Damien Duff yesterday means there is a lot of season yet to play for Chelsea.

You claim that Mourinho "suggested on camera that the Premiership was theirs." When, precisely, did this occur? I recall Mourinho using great restraint in laying any claim to the title. Rather, he seemed to alway refer to the number of points needed to clinch the Prem. Perhaps I missed an interview, but as you have claimed he made a mistake in making a statement, the burden is your's to show what, exactly, was said and when. Having done neither, you're accusation reads quite hallow. Get it fixed.

Mourinho had great restraint for a long time, you are right.

He said it when they went 11 points clear and it was a TV interview on the BBC. Basically he said something to the effect of "It looks ours now".

He hasn't said it since because Chelsea havn't played that great for a few weeks.

There are few comments JM makes, which are captured in print or on braodcast, which escape me, such is my lack of interests beyond the team. Not only can I not recall him saying anything "to the effect of 'It looks ours now,'" nor could I locate any news articles to refresh my memory of such a statement. Likewise, as you have apparently not found the actual statement upon which your commentary relies, your accusation continues to read quite hollow.
