Bergkamp's magic goal

There have been players more prolific than newly retired Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp, but few scorers of greater goals. Perhaps the best example of this was his 2002 Premiership Goal of the Season, scored against Newcastle United on March 2.

The brilliant spin goal started as Robert Pires worked the ball down the left channel, Bergkamp burst into space and appealed for the ball. Pires delivered a good pass from which Bergkamp worked his magic.

First touch, and with the inside of his left boot, Bergkamp tapped the ball to the defenders left and spins right to pass him by. He shrugs off a last ditch sliding tackle and with his second touch coolly slots the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.

It’s one of the finest pieces of skill ever produced on a football pitch and shows just why Bergkamp is called the Dutch Master. He has so many incredible goals, it's hard to choose, but for me this is the best of them all.

What was so special about Bergkamp's goal was that nobody had ever seen one like it. It was totally unique! Great solo goals have been scored in the past by fantastic runs, volleys, chips, lobs, overhead-kicks, long distance shots, diving headers etc. We can all real off dozens of them. What we can't do, however, is compare one to Bergkamp's! That's why it deserves to be up there whenever 'all time greatest goals' are mentioned! Cheers!

Another thing that was so brilliant was the way he spun the ball, somehow he did it with the inside of his boot, I've never seen it done

This has got to be the best goal ever in the Premiership. Not only did he prompt Pires for the pass, he beat a defender twice and then beat the keeper, sublime! Beckham's goal from the halfway line is considered the best and this one number 2, but if Bergy was an English player you can bet that this would be number 1. Beckham's goal, good as it is, did not involved the breadth of skill and technique displayed by Bergy. We are gonna miss him!

it was rubbish, a simple tap with the inside of his boot round a defender, then a push in the chest and a simple finish. nothing special. not like dicanio's goal for hammers

Pure talent, pure magic and some power as well in shielding the ball.

One of the best goals I've ever seen and only he could make it.

All those who say this is nothing special are deluding themselves.

Yes, Dennis uses his elbow in a way that suggests that no Arsenal player or supporter may ever complain about Alan Shearer ever again, but there's no doubting this is one of the best goals of the past 15 years.

At the time this was scored and for years after, I assumed this was a fluke but having seen it time and time again I am convinced: Bergkamp meant that turn and fair play to one of the Premiership's greatest ever players!

As a Newcastle supporter, I support Bergkamp here: this was the kind of beautiful goal that every supporter can accept his team conceding. In the days of Chelsea's ugly grinding of results, we can look back on this sort of genius and reflect on the wonder that once was, not the hideosity that now is, at the height of the British game.

I think this is one of the most over-rated goals of all time. It was a nice touch, but as someone else said above, a better defender than Dabizas (i.e. my nan) would have stopped it.

This was the man Alan Sugar wouldn't sign for £7.5m and went into his Carlos Kickaball rant about.

Nice one Mr Sugar. £11m for Rebrov was it? Says it all.

My comment comes at a time when millions had just witnessed what most probably is this year's goal of the season - Xabi Alonso's 70-yard effort. Great goal, but to me the Beckham one probably has got more significance to me.

But I still have to give praise to that Bergkamp goal. That has got to be one of the most magical moments in English football.

Our UFO has landed quietly last night in a densely populated coordinate at a region humans refer to as "Germany."

This particular congregation was generating so much noise we were compelled to study the anomaly.

As we approached the boiling source of haphazard frequencies, our superb training took over. We were well-trained to

investigate any unusual source and level of human commotion and report immediately back to our ZX-879 headquarters.

Turning on our invisibility shield helped us get really close to the subject of examination without being detected.

As we reached the egg shaped concrete container filled with 100,000 or so human subjects, the noise level rose to

such unimaginable heights that we had to shut down our frequency analyzers for fear of damaging their sensitive

circuitry.

When we cleared the top of the concrete structure we were blinded with thousands of light-emitting radiation

sources.

Then we saw them -- 22 voluntary humans darting back and forth in alternating sequences of random and

seemingly-goal-oriented sprints. We have checked our central computer to decipher the modal characteristic of such

kinetic outbursts and we were advised to locate the focal source of coordinated agitation.

If you ask me i would rather vote Berkamp for henry as the best striker for arsenal.

He partnered very well with henry and their performances was superb.he was a threat to any team.

he can scores goals from any range and that made him the best of all the best
