When Harry Kewell scored that goal against Arsenal….

Remember when Liverpool winger Harry Kewell scored a brilliant goal when he was with Leeds United against Arsenal back in 2003? Those were better days for Leeds, now mired with a mafia of ownership and a good change at sinking to League 2 with a 15 point deduction.

Let’s focus on something positive, though.

It was only the 5th minute, the ball was in the Leeds half with Arsenal passing well and finding their stride. The ball was cut out in defense as Jason Wilcox launched a 40 meter ball over the top of 2 Arsenal defenders.

Kewell does brilliantly to control the ball with the top of his chest, it looks like a hand ball but it’s not. Watch the replay. With the ball on the ground Kewell decides to load up and go first time for goal across David Seaman with a searing shot. Excellent quality, the best goal he’s ever scored.

Here is the goal:

Lovely goal. Though I can't help but find that match over-shadowed by the knowledge that it was the last defeat before Arsenal's 49 games unbeaten. Seems like only yesterday really.

Theres another goal by kewell which is better than this, forgot who it was against, but it was straight from kick off and someone passed it to him and he just blasted it from about 45 yards.

well said.. he handled the ball and as usual the officials saw nothing. not sour grapes just watch the footage from other angles.

Obviously a great strike but come on billions of £ at stake and the part time officials miss everything

Looks like a handball to me. On the first replay you can see it clears his body by quite a distance. Fantastic strike though.

I have the original video and watched it zoomed in and I can confirm absolutely that the ball bounces down off the top of Kewell's chest.

It is hard to tell from the small screen on the YouTube video, but it was quite brilliantly controlled.

It was handball, even Kewell himself admitted it later.
Leeds 3rd goal, scored by Viduka, was also clearly offside, but it was just one of those days.
Even though this result guaranteed Man Utd the title and Leeds survival, an Arsenal win in this game would have only delayed Man Utd winning the title by one week, they were flying and ended up comfortably winning the rest of their games

It was a good goal, only problem was Kewell hand balled it at the start of the move.

'Those were better days for Leeds,'

er you sure mate - they needed to win to avoid relegation & we needed to win to stay in the title race with about 2 games to go I think? (1 of which was a 6-0 mauling of Southhampton, Pennant scoring a hat-trick (i know, i know) & Super Bobby Pires also scoring a hatrick, the 3rd goal being a thing of beauty...anyway I digress).

Kewell's goal was lucky imo, not least because of the handball initially but it was a speculative strike that Seaman really should of done better with.

I actually don't begrudge Leeds for that game or any other tbh, I think it's a sad day when any club gets relegated...well at least for 17 prem teams ;o)

Nailed on handball. I was at the game, saw it from the West Lower plain as day. Was fuming at the time and still can't see how the officials can be so incompetent.

It was handball then ,it is handball now, dont try and delude yourself. As for Sniffer Clarke well thats in the past as well, rather like Leeds' "glory days ".

Not handball? Haha. How can you control a ball that comes over your head, with your chest, and get it to move slightly to the left? Watch his arm come up and watch the direction of the ball.

Clear handball and it's only because he shot so quickly after controlling it with his hand, and because the ref was so far away, that handball wasn't given.

Definate Handball.

I was sitting in the East Lower and couldn't have had a better view.

Matters not though, was a great strike and a fantastic game overall. Arsenal didn't do enough on the day to deserve the win or the title. Pires and Gilberto were both awful. The former going off 'injured' late on(Recovered quick enough to score that amazing hat-trick against Southampton 3 days later funnilly enough). Still 49 unbeaten after that...
