The price of pre-season friendlies

The pre-season tournament/friendly/touring circuit has taken another victim, a young player most have never heard of.

20 year old Ron Vlaar was inches away from his first senior international cap for the Netherlands before a pre-season injury setback.

The talented young AZ Alkmaar defender tore a hamstring against MSV Duisburg on Saturday which is expected to keep him out now for up to six weeks and will cause him to miss a significant part of the club's Eredivisie season.

Dutch national coach Marco van Basten wanted to include Vlaar in the team for a match versus Germany in August. Van Basten has been very willing to try young players and it appeared Ron Vlaar was next in line.
