Alonso should be respected
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is dead wrong. Xabi Alonso made a decision not to travel with the Liverpool team yesterday for their tussle with Inter Milan as his girlfriend was on the verge of giving birth.This is a mistake. Events like these don’t happen every day. A man deserves this moment regardless of what is at stake, and in this case of bunch of boys punting a ball around. A little perspective on what is meaningful in life would be useful. Also a bit of respect for what is meaningful for the individual.
Alonso has been on the back foot at Anfield ever since the arrival of Javier Macherano and the recent emergence of Lucas.
Apparently Alonso was prepared to join up with the team after the birth but Benitez then announced that he was not going to be travelling and had to make due with what he had.

God forbid, some common sense. What does Rafa expect? You have a team built of 20-30 year olds (primarily), they are going to have some newborns once in a while. When that happens, they may miss a match to be with their wifes/girlfriends/etc. I work a high-pressure job too, but got to see my child be born. Silly, Rafa, very silly.
Why must either of them be wrong? Alonso is doing the right thing staying with his GF while she gives birth. Meanwhile, a manager should demand 100% focus and preparedness for the game, failing which that player has to sit out that game. Rafa's point may very well be "yes, it is admirable you staying with GF, but if you do, you know my rules, we must travel there together and train together, so you can't play this game. Nothing personal, but I can't make an exception for you and let you come later. "

Both have made demands within reason. And both have taken the right course of action based upon their priorities. I don't quite believe the media when they say this is a sign of a major rift between the two. Classic case of media over exaggeration.

Alonso, even as a star player needed a break or be excuse in some instances like this. He can't give everything to Soccer as this is not his life and there are certain things that is more important than this one
